Boxing Regulations (unofficial)
The
Commissioner of the Department of Commerce and Insurance is responsible
for the enforcement of the law and regulations pertaining to professional
boxing in Tennessee. The primary objective of this office is the
safety and welfare of the boxers. In order to assure compliance
with the law and in the interest of the boxers' safety, the Investigative
Section has been assigned to assist the Office Coordinator in monitoring
professional boxing events. The monitoring aspects of professional
boxing matches consists of the following:
1.
Pre-licensing of all boxing participants, i.e. boxers, seconds,
timekeepers, judges,
promoters, and referees.
2. Interview all participants and obtain proper identification.
3. Observe and certify boxers' weights.
4. Observe pre-fighting physical examinations as administered by
medical doctor.
5. Measure boxing ring to assure its compliance with State Law.
6. Inspect structure of ring and ring padding to ensure safety of
the boxer.
7. Inspect wrapping of Boxers' hands and gloving procedure.
8. Observe entire fight proceedings to assure compliance with State
law.
9. Prepare result sheets to be mailed to all other state regulating
agencies.
Federal
Standards
Effective July 1, 1997, in addition to any other requirements,
each professional boxer residing in this state shall register
with the
Director and obtain a boxer identification card. All boxers, male
and female, must have this ID Card in order to box anywhere in
the United States.
Toughman
/ Roughman
Tennessee Code Annotated
Section 68-115-401, which became effective on July 1, 1990 authorized "Toughman/Roughman Matches".
The
Commissioner of the Department of Commerce and Insurance is responsible
for the enforcement of this law. These contests are normally two-night
events and must be monitored to assure compliance of the Law and
Rules and Regulations. The monitoring aspects are basically the
same as that of Professional Boxing with the primary objective
being the
safety and welfare of the participants.
Advisory
Board
The Advisory Board for Professional Boxing consists of nine (9)
members. It is the duty of the Advisory Board to assist the Commissioner
in
the continuing implementation and enforcement of Tennessee Code
Annotated, Title 68, Chapter 115, Part 2, by periodically studying,
reviewing,
and evaluating all boxing rules promulgated, or proposed for promulgation,
by the Commissioner. All findings and recommendations of the Board
shall be advisory in nature. The Advisory Board meets once annually,
in July, and at such other times as may be necessitated by the
call of the Commissioner.Contact
