Samuels Sweeps Tennessee's Robbins! (11/12/07)
From Fighnews.com [11/10/07]

Starfight Productions hosted their last event of the year at the A La Carte Pavilion in Tampa, Florida, last night, showcasing five pro debut boxers including standout Keith Thurman.

With four of the six fights ending by knockout, the night was exciting and fast paced for the Tampa crowd.

In the main event, Derrick “Super” Samuels (13-2-1, 2 KOs) took on veteran Marty Robbins (22-38-1, 15 KOs).

Samuels kept his fast jab in Robbins’ face from the get go, using it to land a straight left and hooks behind it. Robbins tried to close the gap, hoping to find more success inside, but the slick southpaw was too nimble to be cornered and Robbins rarely got the chance to unload.

By the fifth round, Samuels’ constant three-punch combinations had grown to four and five punches. As Robbins tired in the later rounds, signs of swelling began to show around his left eye.

Samuels continued to show his dominance over his opponent in the last two rounds with the same mix of speed and accuracy.

Robbins never solved the puzzle that is Derrick Samuels, and all three judges scored the fight a sweep, 80-72, in favor of the “Super” one.

Paris Slugout Fight Recap! (11/6/07)
By: Dennis McCaslin

Paris, AR. -Mansfield, Ar. heavyweight boxer J.D. “The Natural” Chapman ran his undefeated record to 28-0 overall with 25 knockouts when he stopped grizzled veteran Marcus Rhode inside two minutes of the first round of their fight November 3 at the Paris Middle School.

Chapman, ranked 13th in the world by the World Boxing Council and 14th in the World Boxing Association, passed his first test in moving up to world class competition by sending the massive Rhode crashing to the canvas with a series of thundering shots early in their scheduled bout.

Rhode, who has fought basically every legitimate heavyweight contender of the past two decades, was stunned by the crashing blows of the young contender as the fight was stopped just 1:34 seconds into the opening salvo.

“ It’s about what we expected,” said Scott Hirsh, Chapman’s Miami-based manager. “”We didn’t get as much work as we anticipated, because Rhode is a tough guy and it takes a lot to knock him out. But J.D. has been sparing with some of the top guys in the world, and we came in here looking for a knockout.”

“ It (the win) is just the next step in the overall plan to increase the level of competition for J.D. and to to get him into some bigger and better fights,” said Hirsh, who earlier in the week was named Professional Boxing Manager of the Year by the Boxing Writer’s Association.

Hirsh newcomer and heavyweight fighter Kassim Howard moved his record to 2-0 on the year when he slammed debuting Arkansas slugger Buddy Gleason at the 2;11 mark of the firsr round. The St. Augustine fighter has jioined the stable at Hirshs' World Class Boxinbg Managament that also includes Chapman, Shannon Briggs and Jameel McCline in the hevyweight division.

In other featured bouts on the thirteen fight card, Paris native Delray Raines reigned over Pine Bluff’s Dominique Azeez with a fourth round stoppage to earn the Mid America Middleweight crown and Australian Dexter “Dingo” Dunworth battered Mitch Hicks to claim the cruiserweight title with the Mid America designation.

WIBF minimum weight champion Sarah “The Thrilla From Manilla” Goodson stopped Addie Erb with a body shot that had the losing fighter exiting the ring as she went back to her corner after the bell for the fourth round, and Paris native and headliner Matt “Rock Hard “ McCartney demolished Randy Rapp of Russellville with a stunning first round TKO.

Ron Collins of Fort Smith got the first win of his career with a knockout of Nathan Bear and Paul Marinaccio of Cary, North Carolina improved to 23-2-2 with a knockout win over Ron Johnson. Jason Jones, Eliot Foreman, Mike Terry and Tommy “Concrete” Connelley all recorded wins on the program.

Slug Out promoter Stacy Goodson said the success of the event ensures the promotion will be back in Paris, probably in the spring. The promotion is also planning a December event somewhere in or around Fort Smith, according to Goodson.

Chapman Scores Quick KO! (11/5/07)
From Fighnews.com [11/5/07]

A pair of 24-year-old heavyweights notched impressive victories last night on the Slugout Promotions show in Paris Arkansas, as world-rated JD “The Natural” Chapman and former amateur standout Kasim Howard both scored early knockouts. The power-punching Chapman dropped Rhode for a count with his first meaningful punch and then floored the wobbly veteran two more times with right hands before the bout was halted at 1:16 of the first. Chapman is now 28-0, 25 KOs. On the undercard, St. Augustine, Florida, newcomer Kasim Howard showed his excellent skills while taking out pro debuting Buddy Gleason. Already bleeding and battered to the body, Gleason elected not to come out for the second round. Howard moves to a perfect 2-0, 2 KOs.

ART OF WAR 4: Mississippi Mayhem! (10/29/07)
Article and Photos Submitted by Art of War

ART OF WAR 4: Mississippi Mayhem played to a nearly sold-out crowd of 2,400 fans on Saturday, October 27th at Harrah's Grand Tunica Casino & Resort and delivered eight action-packed bouts that all ended before going to the scorecards.

MIKE WESSEL, strength and conditioning coach for the Arkansas Razorbacks, was not the favorite going into his heavyweight main event contest against Memphis native MATT THOMAS. Wessel had only eight months of training and carried a 2-1 record against Thomas, who held a 3-3 record against some tough competition. In the opening seconds of the bout, Wessel's standup proved to be tighter than his opponent's and he opened a cut on Thomas' head. Eventually Thomas shot in for a takedown and had Wessel in a bad position dropping punches and elbows. (more)

Taylor to demand rematch! (10/23/07)
From Fighnews.com [10/23/07]

Former middleweight champion Jermain Taylor doesn't plan to wait for a rematch with conqueror WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik. According to the Youngstown Vindicator, Taylor's representatives have informed Top Rank, Pavlik's promoter, that Taylor plans to exercise a rematch clause calling for an immediate return fight against Pavlik at a catch weight. Top Rank had hoped to stage an interim fight between Pavlik and John Duddy in January before taking on Taylor again. Pavlik-Duddy could still happen, of course, if an agreement with the Taylor Camp can be negotiated. If not, Pavlik's next fight would be a non-title affair against Taylor at 166 lbs.

Pavlik Knocks out Taylor! (10/1/07)
From Fighnews.com [9/29/07]

Unbeaten middleweight Kelly Pavlik (32-0, 29 KOs) scored an incredible seventh round knockout of previously unbeaten reigning champion Jermain Taylor (27-1-1, 17 KOs) to claim the WBC/WBO middleweight championship on Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Both fighters came out and traded bombs in a great round one. Taylor floored Pavlik in round two after a violent barrage and had Pavlik in big trouble. Pavlik barely managed to survive a very rocky round, but somehow regrouped and had a good round three. After several rounds of excellent two-way action, Pavlik landed a big right hand in round seven and his follow up attack sank Taylor to the canvas in Pavlik's corner. Referee Steve Smoger stopped it at 2:14. At the time of the stop, Taylor was far ahead on all three official cards by scores of 58-55, 59-54, 58-55. There is a rematch clause in the contract, so Pavlik-Taylor II might not be far off.

Welterweight star Andre Berto (20-0, 17 KOs) overcame a very brave effort from super tough David Estrada (21-3, 12 KOs), scoring a spectacular eleventh round TKO in a bout for the NABF title that also served as a WBC and IBF eliminator. After softening up Estrada for ten rounds, Berto finally floored Estrada with a big right hand and got the stoppage with his follow up barrage. Time was 1:17. (con't)

Pavlik Ready for “New” Taylor! (9/27/07)
“ Once I land a punch, Taylor will go back to retreating!”
From Fightnews.com [9/27/07]

Undisputed and undefeated World Middleweight Champion Jermain "Bad Intentions" Taylor (27-0-1, 17 KOs) will make the fifth defense of his two-year title reign when he battles #1 contender Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik (31-0, 28 KOs) in the main event of “THROWBACK!” this Saturday at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Taylor has successfully defended his middleweight crown against legendary Bernard Hopkins, Winky Wright, Kassim Ouma, and Cory Spinks since first taking the title from Hopkins in July 2005. Pavlik scored the biggest win of his career in his last fight on May 19, a decisive seventh-round TKO against Edison Miranda in a WBC world title eliminator to determine the mandatory challenger to Taylor.

FightNews feature writer Antonio Castro recently interviewed Pavlik on the “KNR2 BOXING SHOW.”

Pavlik: Taylor will fade! (9/26/07)
“ I Won’t Be Fading in the Championship Rounds”
From Fightnews.com [9/26/07]

Undefeated #1 middleweight contender Kelly Pavlik says his superior conditioning will make the difference when he faces champion Jermain Taylor for the middleweight title on September 29th in the highly anticipated, HBO televised clash. “He fades in the championship rounds,” Pavlik says. “We’re not going to be fading in those rounds.”

Pavlik burst into the title picture with a spectacular demolition of Ernesto Miranda, who most thought would be Taylor’s future main threat in the division. Instead, Pavlik backed Miranda down and beat him to a pulp, earning the title shot in the process. “HBO had him go in as cannon fodder against Miranda,” says his Hall-of-Fame promoter Bob Arum,” “He shocked everybody but not us. We knew what he is capable of and we are confident that he is going to win on September 29.” (con't)

Taylor ready for Pavlik! (9/25/07)

Doesn’t Know Why But Glad It’s a “Hype Fight”
From Fightnews.com [9/25/07]

Undefeated WBC/WBO middleweight champion Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor eagerly awaits Saturday's showdown with #1 contender Kelly Pavlik in what he terms “a hype fight.” What baffles Taylor is why so much attention has been placed on his undefeated opponent – a fighter the champion views as “not even on my level.”

Taylor understands why there was hype for this two battles with longtime middleweight kingpin Bernard Hopkins and his showdown with the talented and tough Ronald “Winky” Wright. He doesn’t comprehend why such attention has been foisted on Pavlik – though he quickly reiterates he’s glad for the extra attention circling the HBO-televised event. “I like these types of fights; that’s what I live for.”

“ I’ve been watching tapes of him and I don’t see him doing nothing,” Taylor says. “He is a strong fighter but he doesn’t excite me. To me he’s a normal fighter. … I don’t see what all the hype
is about.” (con't)

Detroit lightweight Lanardo "Pain Server" Tyner scored an impressive ninth-round TKO over normally durable veteran Marteze “Too Sweet” Logan of Tennessee in the main event of the "Boxing Under the Stars" event Friday at Meadow Brook Music Festival in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

A vocal crowd estimated at more than 3,000 showed up for promoter Joe Donofrio's outdoor fight night.

The heavy-handed Tyner (17-0, 12 KOs) set to work on battering the body of Logan early, then later switched to the head. He dropped Logan in the first with a right hand and again in Round Eight with a combination.

At the bell to start the ninth, an exhausted Logan (25-30-2, 6 KOs) elected to stay on his stool.

It was an impressive win for Tyner, who showed determination and focus in tracking down the elusive Logan. “He was in the wrong state at the wrong time against the wrong fighter!” he exclaimed, post-fight.

Could Set World Record In Corinth, MS, Oct 20th!
Submitted By Edward B. Mendy - Lion Heart Boxing Productions, Ltd.

Corinth, MS, September 5, 2007—Boxing prodigy and knockout superstar, Tyrone Brunson (18-0, 18 KO’s), has his eyes on one thing and one thing only--the world record for consecutive first round knockouts. On Saturday, October 20, 2007, Brunson will seek to break the world record for consecutive first round knockouts, a record he shares with WBA Super Featherweight Champion Edwin Valero (22-0) of Venezuela, at the 9,000-seat Crossroads Arena in Corinth, Mississippi.

Brunson recently got into a bit of a controversy when a broker talked him into signing a promotional with legendary promoter Don King while still under contract with Lion Heart Boxing Productions. After thinking about it further, Brunson reversed course and decided that he would be better off sticking with Lion Heart Boxing Productions. The Don King contract issue currently is being sorted by the parties. In the meantime, Brunson singularly focuses on boxing and desire to KO his own record. (con't)

12 Rounds with Lennox Lewis! (9/11/07)
By Nat Gottlieb, Courtesy of HBO.com

In the course of his brilliant career, Lennox Lewis has been in the ring with some fighters who could really bang. Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, David Tua and Hasim Rahman, to name a few. Lewis knows what to expect when you look across the ring and see a guy who wants to take your head off. The match-up between Jermain Taylor and Kelly Pavlik is truly a "Bangers Ball." No prisoners will be taken. So we asked Lewis, the retired heavyweight champ and HBO commentator to evaluate the fight. Okay, Lennox -- Ding ding!

ROUND 1 (Size)
I think Kelly has bigger muscle mass, and he's got a bigger chest and shoulders. That translates into a heavy puncher. When they say a guy is heavy handed --and they said it about me and about Kelly -- it doesn't come from the hands, it comes from the shoulders and chest.

Jermain brings muscle definition. He's got a pretty tight muscle grouping. What this gives you is endurance, the ability to keep throwing punches into the later rounds. I give the edge to Pavlik although it is very close.

10-9 -- Pavlik

ROUND 2 (Mental Toughness)
Pavlik comes into this fight with nothing to lose. That keeps him focused. He knows what he wants and plans on getting it. He knows that for this fight, he is not going to walk into the ring and not get hit. He is prepared to get hit.

Jermain's mental toughness comes from being a champion. He doesn't think he can lose. He feels this at an extreme level. I was the same way. When they had that press conference (Taylor-Spinks) and Jermain said some strong things about Pavlik and Edison Miranda, it was not trash talk. He means the stuff he says. I'm the same way. Everything I say is reality. If you come to me, I am going to take you out because I have more heart.

Although Jermain would seem to have an edge, there is no way you can say Kelly Pavlik is not a tough guy. He comes to win.

10-10 -- Even, (Con't @ HBO.com)

Judah Wraps Up Training camp in Memphis
Before Heading to Hard Rock! (8/30/07)

Submitted By Prize fight Boxing

Prize Fight Promotions, Super Promotions and Bayou Promotions in association with Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi, MS, Today announced the return of Zab “Super” Judah (34-5-0 25KO's), to the Prize Fight gym in Memphis. Judah is wrapping up his training camp, and preparing to face Edwin Vazquez (22-10-2, 8KO's) Friday, September 7, on the season finale of ESPN's Friday Night Fights, live from the Hard Rock Casino & Hotel in Biloxi Mississippi.

Judah's last outing was June 9, 2007, going head to head in a highly anticipated fight against undefeated WBA Welterweight Champion Miguel Cotto before a sell out crowd at Madison Square Garden New York. He came out strong in the first round before suffering a low blow, another accidental low blow hurt him more than the first and from that point on was unable to fully recover.

“ This is a must win for Zab, as he makes his way back into contention in the welterweight division. Zab is a three time world champion, on any given night at his best he can beat any of the welterweights out there today, Judah hurt Cotto in the first and third rounds and dropped Mayweather, although the ref declared it a slip. A win puts him squarely back in the game." Said Russ Young.“I am a three time world champion, I'm want a fourth title, I am the best out there, I have fought the best in the world, I've had a few diversions along the way but that's boxing, when I am in top form no one can beat me. My camp has been very productive, I feel good.” Said Judah.

Prize Fight signs Amateur Standout Mark Davis! (8/24/07)
Submitted By Prize fight Boxing

Prize Fight Promotions is happy to announce the signing of amateur standout, Mark Davis from Cleveland OH.  Promoter Russ Young is ecstatic saying, "We are very excited about Mark Davis who was the 2005 and 2006 National Champion at 125.  Trainer Mark Davis Sr. and adviser Joe Delguyd were very easy to deal with as we structured the deal with them.  We've had Davis on our radar screen for about 3 years now since the 2004 Olympic Trials, when he made it all the way to the finals at the age of 18. The recommendation from Barry Hunter and Anthony Peterson helped make our decision.  Anthony is very close with Mark and has been very high on him since the amateur days.
With Mark's punching power we know he will be a force to be dealt with.  We are elated to have him as part of our stable."  Davis, who will turn professional as a featherweight, will make his pro debut September 1st at Fitzgerald's Casino in Tunica MS.  Young went on to say" "Being that Mark is a world-class fighter, we will bring him up at the same pace that we fought Anthony and Lamont Peterson. The short-term plan is to build him up quickly.  As long as he's healthy, we will get him on ESPN and hopefully, Showtime and HBO in the future."

By: Bill Calogero, Ringside

Olive Branch, MS – Terry Porter cruised to a unanimous eight-round decision over Lloyd “Jabba” Bryan in their Main Event Cruiserweight bout on Saturday night from the Knox Arena. Knockout Promotions promoted the show.

The first round was a feel out round for both fighters. During the second round, Porter began using his jab to set up his left. He was able to land his left effectively to the head of Lloyd Bryan, who seemed to have a very hard time keeping his balance.

During rounds three, four and five, Terry Porter battered Lloyd Bryan to the head and body seemly at will. Bryan was stumbling around the ring trying to maintain his balance while throwing punches that were just not landing. (more)

If you were to ask the average boxing fan to make a list of the top ten fights they would most like to see, a Jermain Taylor – Kelly Pavlik fight would be included at or near the top of the list.

The September 29th undisputed middleweight championship fight boasts all the elements of classic prizefighting.

There’s the legitimate champion in Taylor and the legitimate number-one contender in Pavlik. Taylor is the boxer, Pavlik the puncher. They are both undefeated and in their primes.

And perhaps best of all, the fight will be broadcast on “regular” HBO, not Pay-Per-View.

Saturday night, Prize Fight Boxing’s Fights at the Fitz boxing series returned to Tunica with five fights that provided the capacity crowd with thrills and knockouts and also included the debut of Prize Fight’s latest signee in the main event.

Rafael Valenzuela (8-1l, 4 KOs), the newest addition to the Prize Fight family, went the distance against Steve Trumble (12-22, 8 KOs) in a six round battle of featherweights.
Valenzuela dominated the fight from the opening bell thanks to his superior speed and punching power.

Trumble was up for the challenge, trading early and often with Valenzuela in the center of the ring and against the ropes. Valenzuela rocked him early in the second ground with a perfect right cross that floored Trumble, but he was able to get up and continue. (more)

Former light-heavy king decisions Hanshaw for minor belt!
Ringside by Damien St. Pierre [7/15/07]

There was a reason Roy Jones, Jr., scheduled his IBC light heavyweight title bout with Anthony Hanshaw at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi: To proclaim that Jones and the Gulf Coast are both back.

The fans showed it by numbering 9,000 strong, and Jones (51-4) showed it by scoring a 12-round decisive decision over the ready-to-upset Hanshaw (27-1-1).

Hanshaw came out on fire, pushing Jones back to the ropes and winning the opening round. Jones came back in round two, showing some of speed and accuracy that made him one of the best pound-for-pound fighters, at one time.

It was apparent after round two that Jones was controlling the bout in the center of the ring. Hanshaw was content on winning the fight by pushing Jones to the ropes and unloading on him.

Jones used a steady body attack throughout the bout, but in round eight, Jones landed a hook to the body that hurt Hanshaw. It was much of the same in round nine as Jones was able to back Hanshaw down for most of the round.

The exclamation mark of the bout was in round 11 when Jones put Hanshaw on the canvas. Hanshaw was able to beat the count, but was visibly shaken.

Though the crowd chanted, “Junior! Junior!,” urging Jones to make the kill, the former champ took his foot of the gas and coasted to a decision victory.

Jones later said, "I knew he was hurt, but I needed the rounds".

All three judges were in agreement as they all ruled in favor of Jones, Jr. with the scores of  118-109, 117-110, 114-113. (more)

For the better part of a decade, there was no need for debate. In terms of skill, reflexes & overall technique, Roy Jones Jr. [50-4 w/38ko] reserved hollowed ground in the sport as the universally regarded “pound-for-pound” kingpin. This mythical “pound-for-pound” ranking was borne from perhaps the most legendary boxer of our times, “Sugar” Ray Robinson, and much like the hero from his youth, Jones now finds himself in a similar position, albeit a half century removed. Jones, "...the games are over Saturday night and the tourture chambers opens up."
From Fightnews [7/12/07]

Roy Jones Jr. arrived one hour, 45 minutes late for today's final press conference for his PPV fight against Anthony Hanshaw on Saturday in Biloxi, MS, and promised to "tear his a-- up.....the games are over Saturday night and the tourture chambers opens up. This ain't gonna be like Mayweather-De La Hoya with all that talking and, when the bell rang, northing happened. This is going to be pain and torture for Hanshaw." Hanshaw stated, "On Saturday night, I will put Roy Jones' old a-- on the canvas."

Jones-Hanshaw presser! (7/12/07)
Roy Jones says, "I tame Tigers!"
From Fightnews [7/12/07]

Roy Jones Jr. and Anthony "The Tyger" Hanshaw met at a pre-fight press conference on Wednesday in Mobile, Alabama in advance of their PPV showdown on Saturday. Tempers have been running high between the two camps with Jones trainer Alton Merkerson and Hanshaw trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. having to be physically separated by security personnel earlier in the day. At the presser, Jones stated "My opponent is a young, undefeated guy who calls himself the Tyger. I brought him down here to tame him. I tame tigers." Hanshaw said, "I want to say this now, right to Roy's face...Roy, you have been knocked out by Tarver, by Johnson...this will be another repeat on July 14." Mayweather Sr. added, "Roy is over, his career is over. Tony will knock him out." Jones refused to pose for any photographs with Hanshaw.

In regard to Hanshaw being barred from the training setup at the IP Casino-Resort-Spa in Biloxi, Jones stated "If someone asks if we can use your house today, you would also say I think not. If they had asked in advance and asked me politely, it might have been a different answer. But I am coming to fight."

Hanshaw-Jones dispute escalates! (7/10/07)
Roy Jones Jr. Continues to bar Hanshaw from hotel gym!
From Fightnews [7/10/07]

Bad blood between the Roy Jones Jr. and Anthony Hanshaw camps continued to boil Tuesday as the two prepare to fight in a scheduled 12-round bout for the IBC light heavyweight title Saturday night at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. For the second straight day, the Hanshaw team was physically barred from using the boxing ring and various bags, owned by Jones, at the host IP Casino-Resort-Spa. "I am getting sick of all this King Roy crap," the undefeated Hanshaw said. "My people are calling the hotel and the operators answer by saying, 'This is the home of Roy Jones.' And look at the posters and billboards and TV ads. They have my name so small you need a magnifying glass to see it. I will make Jones pay in that ring."

Meanwhile, Jones' longtime trainer "Coach" Alton Merkerson, commonly known as Merk, reacted to public comments made Monday by Hanshaw's trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. Merkerson was more than irritated to read that Mayweather referred to Jones as "a glass-chinned bum." Merkerson said, "I got a message for Mayweather. You tell him any comments between these two athletes is one thing. That is okay. But the only for sure bum around here is Mayweather. Make sure you tell him I said that. Let's keep the comments between the two athletes." As a precaution for rising tempers, promoter Murad Muhammad (once a Muhammad Ali bodyguard), has hired an expert security detail to keep things cool at all future pre-fight meetings between the fighters.

Furious Hanshaw vows knockout! (7/9/07)
Roy Jones Jr. bars foe from hotel gym!
From Fightnews [7/9/07]

Tony Hanshaw is furious at Roy Jones Jr., his Saturday night PPV opponent, after Jones ordered hotel officials and security at the host IP Casino-Resort-Spa not to let Hanshaw and his training team use the ring and other boxing equipment which had been set up for both fighters. When Team Hanshaw went to train in the hotel-casino Monday, they were barred by an armed security guard who told them the premises were "off-limits" to anybody except Roy Jones Jr. The boxing ring and the various bags are all owned by Jones who trucked them over from his Florida home. Hanshaw had to take a 40-minute ride each way through heavy traffic to train at the Gulfport Boxing Gym.

" We fly in from Las Vegas and they tell us we are barred from the training center," the usually soft-spoken Hanshaw said. "What kind of nonsense is that? Is this the great, legendary Roy Jones who pretends to be a classy gentleman or is this Roy Jones the egomaniac who thinks he is running boxing?....He got knocked out by Tarver and Johnson and now he is going to get knocked out by me!" Hanshaw's trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. added, "[Jones] is glass-chinned bum who will get starched by my Tyger in six rounds. He's not even in Biloxi today, he's over in Pensacola playing basketball and he wouldn't let us use the gym? He thinks it is all about Roy but what it's really all about is Tony knocking this guy out. Good riddance to bad
rubbish I say!"

In an eight-round, heavyweight battle of former sparring partners, Adam Richards (17-1, 12 KOs), of Murfreesboro, TN kayoed Billy Willis (8-10-1, 7 KOs), of Houston, TX.

“ Swamp Donkey” Richards showed more kick than the unwilling Willis in round one. Landing left hooks close quarter, Richards kept the pressure on his former sparring partner through the first two stanzas.
Finally, in round three, Willis started to open up by parrying Richard’s jabs, though the Tennessean’s harder shots and aggression put another round in the bank.

Then, shortly into round four, a short but devastating left hook to the jaw dropped Willis to the canvas for the count, with an official time of :34.

Willis was dragged off the ropes where he lay by the doctor and revived. After some tense moments of lying motionless, he took a stool and, seemingly, regained his sensibilities.

” When Willis came to he did not know his name nor where he was,” said ringside physician Brian August.
“ He was out of shape, out of luck, and out to lunch.”

World Cage Fighters Fight Recaps! (6/27/07)
By: David Hines, Photo By Chris Spencer

Adriano Nasal ~vs~ Kyle Bradley |  Lightweights (155lbs)
World Jiu-Jitsu Champion, Adriano Nasal, tested his grappling techniques versus the fierce and powerful striker Kyle Bradley, in an extremely exciting Main Event. Nasal attempted to take Bradley to the matt on two occasions with no success. Bradley then faked a right and came back around with a left hook that caught Nasal square on the button. Nasal hit the canvas on his back with Bradley not hesitating to quickly pounce on top of Nasal and deliver a three-punch flurry to his head before the referee could stop the match. (TKO RD1 1:15)  [click here for full recap]   [Click here for photo gallery]

Prize Fight's Brian Young Giving Back! (6/26/07)
" I can't think of a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon." - Brian Young
By Brad Cooney (6/26/07)

How many professional boxing promoters would rent an RV, load it up with young amateur fighters, and set out on a three hour drive to attend an amateur boxing show? That is exactly what Brian Young did on Saturday, June 23, when he showed up for the annual Pearl Day festivities in Pearl, MS.

Each year Richard Archer and Stan Nichols (Pearl Boxing Club) set up a boxing ring and teams from the surrounding four states (Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and Louisiana) show up for a day of fights.

Usually, the same clubs participate and the same people make the trip. They gather together, shake hands and congregate in little circles to converse. Boxing stories old and new fill the air.

The kids seem to stay the same. Just a little older and a bit taller. It's an annual boxing event that is the same old song and dance. So when I saw an RV pull into the parking lot that I didn't recognize, it got my attention.

The doors opened up and what seemed like an endless stream of kids wearing white Prize Fight Boxing Team shirts exited the RV. The driver looked familiar to me. The bald head, sunglasses and ball cap wasn't enough to fool me. It was the head of Prize Fight Promoters, Brian Young.

I thought to myself, "How many professional boxing promoters would take their Saturday, and do this?" I tried to picture Bob Arum doing it, and that didn't work. I tried to picture Lou Di Bella doing it, and that didn't work either.

Once the kids registered, I figured that's where Young would hand the coaching reigns off to someone else. I was wrong again. Each time a Prize Fight kid would fight, Spit bucket, spray bottle, water bottle and all, Brian Young worked their corner.

To me, that is what it's all about. It was a breath of fresh air to see a professional boxing promoter, a guy that has promoted high profile fights the likes of Mike Tyson vs Lennox Lewis, Jermain Taylor vs Winky Wright and Antonio Tarver vs Roy Jones Jr, show up at an amateur boxing show and get his hands dirty. Brian Young told me many things on this day but one thing stuck with me, he said, "I can't think of a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon."

Young's leadership and dedication to the sport of boxing spans from the national to a community level. Through his actions Young helps us to remember where it all starts and shows us how to give back. American boxing could be revived to its vigor of yesteryear if people would give back as Young has. Would it fix everything? No. But it sure as Hell couldn't hurt.

Jones and Hanshaw Ready!! (6/26/07)
From Fightnews.com (6/26/07)

It’s clear that both Roy Jones Jr. and his next opponent, Anthony Hanshaw, are looking to use a victory over each other as a springboard into the fights they truly want. During a telephone conference to discuss their upcoming light heavyweight showdown on July 14 at Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi, both Jones and Hanshaw revealed their dream opponents. “I can’t wait to get to it (a fight with Felix Trinidad), but first I have to deal with Anthony Hanshaw. I’m not taking anybody lightly. First I’ll stop Anthony Hanshaw and then I’ll stop Felix Trinidad,” revealed the former champion. Hanshaw, meanwhile, says a win over Jones would put him in place to settle an old score: “A win will open a lot of doors for me. I’m moving up in weight for this fight, but after this, I’m moving back down to super middleweight. I really want to fight Jermaine Taylor. That’s who beat me in the Olympic trials two weeks before my dad died. That’s who I really want. I wasn’t focused against Taylor. I beat Kelly Pavlik and Sergio Mora, but my mind was not in the fight.”Jones and Hanshaw both say they’ll be at their best on fight night. “I’m anxious and in the best shape of my life and ready to go. I will absolutely knock him out,” growled Hanshaw. “I love the sport, I love my fans. I miss my fans. I want to give them a show to look at with a good opponent,” Jones responded. “I can’t wait for the opportunity to show you all that I ain’t through yet.”

Jones-Hanshaw LA presser!
(6/10/07)
Report/Photos: Big Joe Miranda, From Fightnews.com (6/12/07)

Roy Jones Jr. and Anthony Hanshaw made a stop in Los Angeles today at the historic "Los Angeles Sentinel" (the oldest and largest African-American-owned newspaper west of the Mississippi). Both fighters had little to say to each other. Hanshaw commented that he is a man of few words and he does all his talking in the ring. "You'll see who the best fighter is that night, so don't miss it." Jones Jr was humble saying that he feels good and he'll be ready on July 14. He didn't mention anything about beating Hanshaw or make any boasts about being the best fighter out there. As usual, it was promoter Murad Muhammad who had most to say, stating he doesn't want you to miss history, adding that Anthony "The Lion" Hanshaw had the heart of a lion and he was going to come out roaring. Super middleweight contender Librado Andrade, who was among those on hand, pointed out that Anthony calls him self Tony "The Tiger" Hanshaw, not "The Lion." Jones and Hanshaw will meet in a July 14 PPV clash at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, MS.

Boxing's New Superstar! (6/10/07)
By Matt Richardson, From Fightnews.com (6/9/07)

Felix who?
Saturday night in front of a rabid crowd of 20,658 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, WBA Junior Welterweight Champion Miguel Cotto continued on his path to super stardom with an emphatic and violent eleventh round knockout of former champion Zab Judah.

In a back-and-forth encounter in which both men were hurt, Cotto (30-0, 25 KOs) and Judah (34-5, 25 KOs) exchanged heavy shots all night before Cotto finally broke down his opponent.
