Miranda targets Taylor! (12-19-06)
From Fightnews.com
In less than three minutes on Saturday night, Edison 'Pantera' Miranda reminded the boxing world why he is probably the most devastating puncher in the middleweight division. Now the Colombian bomber wants the hardware to go with his status as the people's champion, and in 2007, the first man on his hit list is the fighter seen as the undisputed titlist at 160 pounds, Jermain Taylor. "I definitely want Jermain Taylor as soon as possible and I hope he will be a true champion and fight me," said Miranda. "He needs to stop fighting old men and junior middleweights and fight a true 160-pounder who is coming to fight, not just peck away at him and survive. I don't come into fights looking for decisions; I come in looking for knockouts, and if Taylor truly wants to be respected as a champion, he needs to accept my challenge."

Taylor decisions Ouma!
(12-11-06)
By JD Meredith and David Hudson at Ringside - Fightnews.com

For Jermain Taylor, Kassim "The Dream" Ouma lived up to his nickname, for the
middleweight king, fighting in front of his home town for the first time as a champion, could
not have asked for a dreamier title defense.

Well, short of a knockout, anyway, for while dominating the fight, Taylor was unable to
floor the game Ouma.

While chants of "JAY-TEE!" filled the Alltel Arena in Little Rock, Arkansas, Taylor
dominated the score cards in the early rounds, building a sizeable lead while Ouma could do
little but weather the storm.

Down the stretch, "The Dream" sought to turn into Taylor’s nightmare, rallying in a
desperate attempt to dethrone the champion, but could not change the course of the fight.

All three judges scored it unanimously for Taylor, with scores of 118-110, 117-111 and
115-113.

Fightnews also had Taylor winning, though closer to the 115-113 score than the 118-110
ledger.

" He came in and fought all twelve rounds," said the champion, now 25-0-1 (17 KOs). "He
was a tough guy. He was just that tough."

Ouma, now 25-3-1 (15 KOs), told the press that he would like another shot at Taylor, even
if it was in Little Rock again.

" I’m never going to give up," he said. (more)

Andre Berto: American Soldier (12-1-06)
By Scott Foster

Shortly after 9/11, Andre Berto [15-0 w/13ko] stood prepared to defend his country. His aim was not to storm a watery beachhead, nor was it to secure some distant, foreign mountaintop. His intent, instead, was to defend the United States on the world’s stage, earning a coveted slot on the 2004 Olympic Boxing team. After besting the #1 jr. middleweight in the nation, Juan McPherson [4-0 w/2ko], for the better part of 4 rounds in the Trials, Andre found himself on the verge of completing a dream. But his dream would become short lived as Berto was rudely awakened by a combination of politics, contrivance & circumstance. With mere seconds left in his bout with McPherson, a bungled clinch would lead to a harsh disqualification, eventually culminating in an ejection from the trials, effectively erasing any hope of Andre participating in the games.
For most, the story would end there, fraught with bitter disillusionment and disdain for the system. Berto, however, would in turn “game” the system, utilizing the Haitian blood in his family to secure a spot as the sole member of their team in Athens.
Andre’s excitement gave way to disappointment as his pressure style lost out to the “hunt & peck” technique favored by current Olympic judging. But Andre’s potential was not lost on those ringside -- and more importantly -- it solidified what Lou Dibella had witnessed firsthand in the Trials. Dibella didn’t require gold, silver or bronze – his focus centered on work ethic, desire, and a style he knew to be best suited for the professional ranks. (more)

(12-8-06) Jermain Taylor Feels He Still Has Much to Prove!
Story by David Hudson
“ He could be considered one of the best middleweights ever with the tremendous amount natural talent that he has.”
That’s very high praise given that the 160-pound division has produced the likes of Carlos Monzon, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Bernard “the Executioner” Hopkins, Mickey “the Toy Bulldog” Walker, Stanley “the Michigan Assassin” Ketchel and the incomparable Sugar Ray Robinson.
It’s even higher praise given that it comes from no less an authority than Hall-of-Fame trainer Emanuel Steward. The statement doesn’t come simply because Taylor is Stewart’s latest protégé. It comes because Jermain Taylor possesses a wealth of natural ability, tremendous desire and solid punching power.
The 28 year old Taylor already has amassed an impressive resume with two close wins over Hopkins and a draw against Ronald “Winky” Wright. Steward said it’s “almost unprecedented in boxing history” for a young fighter to fight those two hall-of-fame caliber fighters in succession. (more)

December New Daisy Report! (12-6-06)
The Decemeber edition of Boxing on Beale, promoted by Knockout Promotions and Knox and Cerbe Managment and Training, was held this past Tuesday evening at the New Daisy Theatre on Historic Beale Street, Memphis, TN.
Fan turnout was solid, concidering the Memphis Grizzlies faced the New York Knicks just across Beale at the Forum. Loyal fans filed in and packed the seats of the small but big hearted, New Daisy Theatre.
Virgous (1-2) - Watkins (2-0)
Kiana Vigious and Kita Watkins ( Eldorado, AR) faced each other in a rare female main event at the New Daisy Theatre.
Although she had the support of the crowd Virgous just couldn't get things going against Watkins.
In the first round Virgous and Watkins traded punches in the center of the ring as if it were the final round.
Virgous did land some hard shots but could not capitalize. Watkins could. During their exchanges Watkins' leather found their mark often with damaging effects at the expense of Virgous as twice in the first Virgous was issued standing 8 counts.
It was much the same story in the second stanza. Virgous came out game and swing. Watkins did as well but with better results. At 1:35 of round two referee Alan Lovell stepped between Watkins and Virgous after a vicious Watkins attack left Virgous defenseless.
Virgous was not happy with Lovell's decision to stop the fight but in our opinion he made the right call without doubt.
To her credit, Virgous didn't quit when things got tough and she showed tremendous heart.
Watkins, surprised many during her demolition of a tough and game opponent in this fight.
She improves to 2-0.
Bruce (1-5, 1 KO) - Fairweather (0-2)
Who says you that can't win a fight moving backwards? That is exactly how Jonathan Bruce set up his KO win last night at the New Daisy.
Jermey Fairweather came out with guns blazing in the first round. Initially, it was a wild sight but things settled down. Jonathan Bruce spent the majority of the round back pedaling. Eventually, he learned that he could land with his jab as Fairweather moved recklessly forward. The jabs were not hard but over time they caused damage.
In the opening seconds of round two Bruce connected a single jab that momentarily stunned Fairweather. Just as Fairweather began to take a step forward he slumped to the canvas. He didn't make the ten count. Official time was :38 seconds of round two. This victory is Bruce's first.
Tolley (3-5, 2 kO's)- Tucker (0-2)
Jesse Tolley was accurate with his jab in this bout. Tucker looked to counters and play opossum to land stray booms. In round two Tucker was issued a standing eight count and at the end of round two he decided not to continue. Tolley wins by TKO RD 2.
Cudjoe (10-3, 7 KO's) - McWhirter (2-8, 2 KO's)
In round one Greg McWhirter (255 lb) did a great job of getting to the body of the 290 pound broad-shouldered Grant Cudjoe. McWhirter's body attack faded thought when, late in the first, Cudjoe let his jab go and it found rest on McWhirter's face.
In round two Cudjoe turned the pressure on and connected multiple punchs that sent McWhirter into the ropes. McWhirter was issued a standing 8 count.
Cudjoe continued with his onslaught by making contact with his piston-like jab. Then He went at McWhirter with a thunderous left hook to the body, right hook to the body followed by a left to the
temple. The initial left sent McWhirter reeling against ropes where referee Clay Huddleston waived the fight off after McWhirter could not continue. Official ruling was KO 2, 2:09.
Rounding out the night
Gary Britt (1-2, 1 KO - weight not available) KO'd Joey Baker (0-1, 170 lb) in round two of a scheduled four round light heavyweight bout. In a lopsided fight, Willie Diamond (4-6, 2 ko's - 140 lb) defeated Vanerlei Barnes (0-1 - 136 lb) by KO at 1:04 of round two. Jeremy Glen Hayes (1-0, 1 ko - 177 lb) took out Scott Baker (0-2 - 167 lb) at 1:23 of round one.

Guinn: It's Them or Me! (12-4-06)
Lee Bates - Fightnews.com
When Dominick Guinn (26-4-1, 18 KOs) defeated Michael Grant by way of seventh round TKO in 2003, expectations were high for him.
Since then, Guinn has gone 4-4-1; however, to his credit, Guinn has been fighting the best competition in the heavyweight division. His losses came against opponents who had combined career records of 145-9-2. One of those fighters, Sergei Liakhovich, went on to become a world champion and another, James Toney, had just won the WBA title and been stripped for steroid use.
Guinn will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday, December 9, as he battles Zack Page on the undercard of Jermain Taylor vs. Kassim Ouma mega-fight at the Alltel Arena in North Little Rock, in his home state of Arkansas.
Guinn spoke with FightNews about the excitement of fighting in front of his home fans again; the tough competition he has fought in his losses, and his new philosophy on how he will fight from now on. (more)

" I enjoyed training with Jermain Taylor for this second fight that I have been with him. The more that I spend time with him I'm realizing that he has so much talent that has never been even developed and he has the ability - if he remains at 160 - which I believe he will for another year or so by the way he is looking now, that he could be considered one of the best middleweights ever with the tremendous about of natural talent that he has.  And, I'm just excited about this next fight," said Steward. Happy Thanksgiving From MemphisBoxing.com! (11-22-06)
We hope you and your family have a warm and safe Thankgiving week!

Fights at the Fitz Report (11-22-06)
JD Meredith and Tim Kellum at ringside
Saturday night, Prize Fight Boxing put on an early Thanksgiving boxing card at Fitzgerald's Casino - Tunica, for a jubilant sell out crowd. The card was not billed with a Thanksgiving theme but for fight fans it truly was a card to be thankful for.
Fights at the Fitz are always entertaining and enjoyable but Prize Fight went above and beyond Saturday night by opening up their stable and leading out two young studs that will one day stand at the starting gates for a shot at the triple crown of their divisions. Those studs, Anthony and Lamont Peterson, where brought in for what was is most likely their last appearances in a small venue such as the Ballroom at Fitzgerald's.
The Petersons weren't the only class acts on the card. DeAndre Abron battled Kippy Warren. Unbeaten, "Mr Showtime" Ira Terry faced Richard Dinkins and rounding out the card was Josiah Judah, younger brother to Zab "Super" Judah who sqaured off with Rodney Freeman.
Ann Wolfe was originally slated to fight Valarie Mafood, from who she resceived her sole defeat, but pulled out of the fight for reasons unknown.
Prior to the beginning of the first bout a ten count and moment of silence was extended to the memory of the late Hearn Marler. Hearn, who had fought at Fitzgerld's, was recently killed in an automobile accident. (continued below)
Anthony Peterson vs Alfred Kotey
NABO Lightweight Champ and WBO #3 Lightweight Contender Anthony Peterson (136lb - 21-0, 15 ko's) needed only his jab to work his way around former champ Alfred Kotey (135lb - 24-14-1, 14 ko's). Persistent jabs in Kotey's face kept him on the defensive for most of the fight with the exception of the a short bursts in round four and eight. Peterson dominated the fight but Kotey tried to work in his jab did manage to connect with a few of solid punches.
In round seven Peterson noticably let his hands go until Kotey's jab began to connect.
Peterson then reeled it back in and continued to control the fight with the jab.
Kotey never seemed frustrated or hurt in the fight but did appear to be amazed at Peterson's handywork.
After eight, all three judges scored the bout 80-72 for Peterson.
Lamont Peterson vs. Marteze Logan
NABF Light Welter Champ Lamont Peterson (141lb - 19-0, 7 ko's) put his arsenal on display when he met up with local journeyman Marteze "Too Sweet" Logan (140lb - 24-26-2, 6 ko's). Mixing jabs with combos, Peterson distributed punches evenly between Logan's head and body.
Logan, is an agressive fighter who has been known to topple fighters in their prime. He is smart and elusive. Peterson took on his challenge and met it with skill and maturity, fighting within his limits and staying in control.
There were many great exchanges during this fight. Logan was able to land on occassion but Peterson landed his trademark left upper cuts and displyed his spectacular footwork by slipping and moving in a Matrix-like fashion. Peterson escaped the fight virtually unscathed.
After eight judges scored the bout 79-73 | 80-72 | 80-72 for Peterson.
At the break of the first round, Logan’s corner called referee Randy Phillips over to check a substance on what appeared to be Logan’s head. Phillips checked Peterson’s gloves and reported back to Logan’s camp without apparent incident.
DeAndre Abron vs. Kippy Warren
DeAndre Abron punctiated his eleventh victory with a frightening third round KO of fellow light heavyweight Kippy Warren. In a fight that was tilting in Warren's favor, Abron was steadily beaten to the punch. Warren's busy jab was in Abron's face until 2:06 of round three when Abron delievered a brutal straight right to Warren’s head. Warren hit the canvas and immediately the fight was waved off. Warren's head hit hard on the canvas when he fell which compounded the knockout blow. He was down quite some time and then medically assisted out of the ring. It certainly seemed Warren was frustrating Abron until the KO, however, Abron was able to bull his way to a win with pure power.
Ira Terry vs Richard Dinkins
Jr. Lightweight Ira Terry put the heat on Richard Dinkins. With vicious body work and heavy hands Terry pounded away at Dinkins. In round two Terry's power dropped Dinkins to the canvas, forced the referree to give Dinkins a standing eight count then sent Dinkins to the canvas a second time. After the second knockdown Dinkins answered the referee on the count of eight and just as teh fight resumed, unbeknownst to Dinkins, his corner threw in the towel. The fight came to a merciful hault at 2:35 in the 2nd round. Dinkins was a gritty, determined fighter, but nevertheless, failed to deter Terry who cruises to 11-0 with 8 TKOS.
Josiah "Gorilla" Judah vs Anthony Bowman
Josiah "Gorilla" Judah, younger brother of Zab "Super" Judah fought at very tenative and hesitant bout against a game Anthony Bowman. Judah would not let his hands go and seemed to ease his way up to Bowman as if he were slowly looking around a corner. Judah's corner asked him to stay with his jab. When Judah did connect he would back away to admire his work. During the many clinches that were seen Bowman would punch Judah in the back of the head. In round five Bowman had a point deducted for holding and punching. Judah didn't look comfortable in this bout and Bowman landed the harder shots in this match. After six rounds Judges ruled unanimously for Judah, however Bowman appeared to be the crowd favorite after the fight. Scores were 58-56 | 59-54 | 59-54.Fitzgerlds Quick Results and Photos! (10-4-06)

Peterson Brothers at Fitzgeralds This Sat (11/18)! (11-17-06)
Southaven, MS – Prize Fight Boxing returns to The Fitz Casino & Hotel November 18th as the undefeated Peterson brothers are set to appear in separate bouts in the latest installment of Prize Fight’s “Fights At The Fitz”. The main event will feature undefeated and #3 world ranked Anthony Peterson in an 8 round clash against former world titlist, Alfred Kotey from Ghana . Presently, Anthony (20-0,16 KO’s) is the NABO Lightweight Champion and was recently named by ESPN Boxing as it’s 2006 prospect of the year. Anthony appeared on ESPN multiple times in 2006 and captured his NABO title on the network in June by defeating Adan Hernandez at WC Handy Park in Memphis, TN. However, his opponent Alfred Kotey has a record of 24-13-1 (14 KO’s) and is a former WBO world title holder who has fought some of the toughest boxers in the business today. Consequently, Kotey is sure to be a formidable opponent for Anthony Peterson.
Lamont Peterson 18-0 (8 KO’s) returns to the Fitz for the first time since December 2005 as he will square off against Marteze Logan from nearby Covington, TN. Lamont is coming off a convincing victory this past September over Omar Bernal and must get by the tough Logan to line himself up for a potential title shot in 2007. Logan, who recently shocked the previously undefeated prospect Americo Santos, looks to add a blemish to Lamont’s perfect record. The Peterson vs. Logan bout will be an 8 round bout in the Jr. Welterweight division.
The star studded card at the Fitz continues to get better as 8-Time World Champion Ann Wolfe will also be on the card in a 6 round bout in the female super middleweight division. Wolfe is no secret to mid-south fight fans as she has appeared at The Fitz and in Memphis at FedExForum many times already in her career. Wolfe 24-1 (16 KO’s) will put her 19 fight win streak on the line against Valerie Mahfood 19-11-3 (9 KO’s). Mahfood is the only woman alive who has ever beaten Ann Wolfe as she stopped Wolfe on November 30, 2000 in front of a stunned audience in Houston, Texas .
Also on the card will be local sensation Ira Terry 10-0 (6 KO’s) from nearby Brighton, TN. Ira has been on a fast pace since turning pro this past February and will battle a yet to be named opponent in a 6 round Jr. lightweight bout. Ira’s combination of speed and power is admired by the Fitz fans as he is quickly becoming a fan favorite.
Josiah Judah, the younger brother of 3-Time World Champion Zab Judah, will make another appearance at the Fitz. Josiah will battle journeyman Anthony Bowman in a 6 round clash that is sure to be entertaining from the opening bell. In July of this year, Josiah last appeared at the Fitz as he won a unanimous decision against Norman Johnson. At the present time, Zab Judah is expected to be in attendance at "Fights at the Fitz".
Tickets are on sale now for this star studded event at the Fitz Casino Gift Shop. Ticket prices are $25 in advance and $30 at the door and are sure to sell quickly given the line up of boxers on display. Torres Destroys Wiggins! (11-14-06)
Shamus Young at ringside - fightnews.com
Saturday night at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, WA, local favorite David Torres, 17-0, took just three rounds to stop late substitute Tyrone Wiggins, 7-20-1. Light welterweight Torres was scheduled to take on the tough Santos Pakau, but Pakau pulled out last week to join the Mayweather-Baldomir under card. Wiggins, from Covington, TN, was brought in to keep Torres busy. Wiggins enjoyed a large height and reach advantage, but Torres was easily able to slip inside Wiggins' wide punches and brutalize the body. After three rounds of body punishment, Torres landed a straight right that put Wiggins down hard. Wiggins made it to his feet at the count of 9, but was unable to respond to referee Paul Field. Time of the KO was 2:59 of the third round.

Performance Crackdown? (11-10-06)
Many of those who are familiar with Boxing on Beale at the New Daisy Theatre know that scheduled bouts fall through from time to time. Bouts get marked off a card due to circumstances such as emergencies, no shows or fighters just plain refusing to fight. It is in our opinion at Memphisboxing.com that this past Tuesday night at the New Daisy Theatre, a seems that crack down began on the latter two. At least one fighter was asked not to return to the New Daisy because of their lack of commitment to the ring (refused to fight). Comments were also made to at least one other fighter, suggesting that they not return to box at the New Daisy due to the fact their performances showed very, very little effort (which places them in danger of injury and make for noncompetitive fights). This message should ring out loud and clear to fighters and fight fans alike who are a part of the long running monthly boxing show held at New Daisy Theatre on Beale. What is the message? In the opinion of MemphisBoxing.com, the message to fighters is that they will agree to finish what they start or risk losing their opportunity to fight at the New Daisy venue. The message to fight fans is that they will see the show they came to see.

Boxing on Beale Fight Report from the New Daisy ! (11-8-06)
Tim Kellum at ringside - Memphisboxing.com
Reaves Decisions Swift
Ron Reeves (1-0 – 160.5 lbs) of Augusta, GA, took on Ricardo Swift (0-4 – 159 lbs) of Jackson, TN, in a middleweight match up to kick off the festivities of the November edition of Boxing on Beale Tuesday night at the New Daisy Theatre on Beale Street in downtown Memphis, TN.
The Early part of fight saw Reaves on the offensive and landing early combinations against Swift. Swift slipped in counter punches on Reeves and landed a good clean straight left to Reaves’ head mid-way through the first. Swift finished the round with a counter to Reeves’ head as he was being backed into the ropes, however, the punch didn’t do much damage.
Reaves turned on his jab early in the second. Swift abandoned the counter game and attempted to attack Reaves with combinations and a wild left haymaker which repeatedly missed. It was apparent that Swift was tiring mid-way through the second and his breathing became labored as Reaves continually escaped his punches. Reaves, sensing Swift’s predicament, began to focus his punches on Swift’s body. Pounding out any residual stamina Swift had in reserve.
The third round was fairly uneventful although Swift did catch Reeves with a good right in the third, however, it lacked significant power.
In the forth, Reaves staggered Swift with a left up top and went on to win the match 36-40; 37-40; 36-39.
Little KO's Hayes
In what appeared to be a last minute add-on match Frankie Little (1-0, 1 ko – 202 lb) climbed in the ring with 320 lb Jonathan Hayes (0-3). Making fairly quick work of his opponent and facing no opposition, Little dropped Hayes to his knees at the 1:52 minute mark in the first round. Hayes was on the defensive, slapping at Little while backing away the entire fight. At one point, Hayes bent over, lowered his head and covered up allowing Little to literally tee-off on Hayes until Hayes dropped to his knees and surrendered.
Santiago Samaniego KO's Willis
Former Junior MW and IBO MW Champ Santiago Samaniego (37-10-1, 29 ko's) battled the always tough Karl Willis (25-24-1, 17 ko's) in a middleweight clash.
Round one saw both fighters being active with Willis connected with a straight left.
In the second, both fighters again very active. The crowd jeered as the fighters tangled up in the center of the ring, holding and punching. This holding resulted in Samaniego receiving a warning from Referee Allen Lovell.
Round three is where the separation between the fighters began. Willis started off with a straight jab. Under attack by Samaniego, Willis bent forward at the waist, began to bob and weave and surprised Red with an overhand right coming out of his bent-over position. Red however, was quicker the quicker fighter and after landing several punches eventaully dropped Willis to one knee. After a making the count, Samaniego again landed an overhand right that gave willis pause. Willis appeared hurt and winded at round’s end.
Round four was more of the same for Willis. Samaniego pressed Willis into ropes landing punch after punch once again dropping Willis to one knee. After the count, Willis showed the crowd he still had some fight left as he mounted an attack. After another Willis' failed attempt, Samaniego scored a series of punches and dropped Willis at center ring. After the second knockdown, Samaniego moved his focus to Willis’ body. Willis appeared to be a step late with his punches, but he appeared determined and game to take the fight to Samaniego. At the end of the round Samaniego dropped Willis again just as the bell sounded.
In round five both fighters met in the center of the ring. Willis connected with a jab or two and a decent right. Samaniego, retaliated and dropped Willis to one knee with what appeared to be a left to the body. After the count Samaniego attacked Willis’ body, backing him into the corner. A Left hand to the head by Samaniego dropped Willis to one knee for a final time at 2:26.
Craig “the Body Snatcher” Gandy (5-0, 5 ko's) brought in a several followers from Arkansas to see him fight at the New Daisy. They held signs and cheered for “the Body Snatcher." Unfortunately for him and his fans, Gandy's opponent did not show.
Smith Wins Split decision over Porter
China Smith (32-4, 25 ko's) of Sarasota, FL, took on Little Rock's own Terry Porter (15-20-3, 9 ko's) in a ten round Heavyweight clash. Smith won a close battle by split decision.

Jermain Taylor Set and Ready for First Homecoming Defense! (11-7-06)
Andre Berto vs. Miguel Figueroa Featured In Co-Main Bout
Norman D. Horton – NDH Consultants
NEW YORK, Wednesday, November 8 - World Middleweight Champion Jermain "Bad Intentions" Taylor will don boxing gloves instead of a Santa suit, but he’ll get the opportunity to deliver a present when he defends his title at home in North Little Rock, Arkansas for the first time on December 9th at Alltel Arena. Taylor (25-0-1, 17 KOs) will put his title at stake in front of his hometown fans when he takes on former World Champion Kassim “The Dream” Ouma (25-2-1, 15 KOs). The 12-round main event is being promoted by DiBella Entertainment in association with Golden Boy Promotions and Peltz Boxing.
Taylor, 28, is one of boxing’s brightest stars and one of Arkansas’ most popular athletes. The fight with Ouma will mark his first defense in his home state. He won the title by defeating the legendary middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins on July 16, 2005, and repeated the win in the rematch on December 3, 2005.
“ There’s no place like home and there’s no place
I would rather defend my title.”

“ There’s no place like home and there’s no place I would rather defend my title,” said Taylor, whose last appearance in Arkansas was a one-sided decision over ex-middleweight champion William Joppy on Dec. 4, 2004. “I have a lot of respect for Kassim Ouma. I know he’s hungry and he’s coming to get this title and we’ll give the fans a great night of boxing.”
Taylor is known as much for his quiet charm and rugged good looks as he is for his boxing skill, but he’s developed one of the game’s most impressive resumes. He won a bronze medal in the 2000 Olympics after becoming the first Arkansas ever to compete in the Olympics. He quickly showed his amateur success was no fluke, reeling off seven consecutive wins, including five knockouts, in his first year alone as a pro. But he’ll face one of his most difficult challenges in Ouma, who is a former world title holder and is noted as one of the most active fighters in the business. Ouma consistently sets records for punch outputs and routinely throws more than 100 punches a round.
“ I watched Ouma against Sechew Powell, and excellent fighter who I have sparred with and let me tell you, the man comes to fight,” Taylor said of Ouma, who handed Powell his first pro loss on Aug. 5. “I respect that. He’s not the type of fighter who worries about technique. He throws punches and comes to win.”
Ouma, who will be 28 just three days after the fight, was born in Uganda. At 6, he was kidnapped and forced to join the national resistance army.
Andre Berto (15-0, 13 KOs), who is winning acclaim from many boxing writers as the top young fighter in the game, will meet gritty veteran Miguel Figueroa (24-5-1, 14 KOs) in the co-feature. Berto competed for Haiti in the 2004 Olympics and won a bronze medal for the U.S. in the 2003 World Championships. Only four of his bouts have gone more than four rounds.
As another treat for the home fans, former world heavyweight title challenger Dominick Guinn of Hot Springs, Ark., will also fight on the card. The opponent for Guinn (26-4-1, 18 KOs) will be Zach Page (12-8-1, 4 KO's) who is coming off a win against former Light Heavyweight Champion Louis Del Valle.
Tickets are priced at $650, $500, $300, $200, $150, $125, $75, $45, & $25 (Students Under age 18, Seniors & Active Military). Available through Alltel Arena Box Office, all Ticketmaster Outlets (501-975-7575) and Online at www.ticketmaster.com <http://www.ticketmaster.com> .

" Spider" Webb Dominates opening Minutes – KO'd in 1st! (11-6-06)
Oscar Paredes - From Fightnews.com
Columbia, TN, fighter, James "Spider" Webb (19-2, 16 ko's - 146 lb) faced Miguel Rodriguez (28-2, 22 ko's - 147 lb) on the undercard of the Liakhovich-Briggs showdown at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona last Saturday (11/4). In an interesting turn of events, welterweight Miguel "Miki" Rodriguez (28-2, 23 KOs) survived Webb's stiff challenge. Webb dominated the first two minutes of the bout, controlling the action with crisp combinations from long range. Rodriguez's left eye quickly began to swell, developing a mouse, courtesy of the right hand of Webb. "Spider" (ranked #13 by the IBF), seemed too aggressive and too strong for Rodriguez (ranked #7 by the WBC), manhandling him around the ring landing crushing lefts and rights whenever he opened up. Just when it appeared Webb would completely take over, Rodriguez took half of step back and unleashed a thudding right hand that caught Webb flush on the chin. Webb went down in a heap, landing face first in the canvas. He rose on unsteady legs at the count of seven. After taking a look into his eyes, Referee Nico Perez stopped the bout at 2:02.

" Spider" Webb on Liakhovich-Briggs Undercard! (11-3-06)
Columbia, TN, fighter, James "Spider" Webb (19-1, 16 ko's - 146 lb) will be facing Miguel Rodriguez (27-2, 22 ko's - 147 lb) on the undercard of the Liakhovich-Briggs showdown at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday Nov. 4th. Rodriguez, from Naucalpån, MX, recently lost a 12 RD unanimous decision to Carlos Baldomir and Webb began his career with eighteen wins before his first loss so both fighters are looking for a big rebound. Liakhovich-Briggs will air on Showtime although it is doubtful that the Webb vs Rodriguez fight will be televised.

Bryant (13-0, 9 ko's – 167) vs Billy Thompson (8-6, 3 ko's – 171)
An electrified crowd cheered wildly during the main event which pitted unbeaten super middleweight beast, Rowland Bryant, against the tough Billy Thompson. Bryant entered the ring and brought his guns, speaking of his arms off course, with their impressive reach and serious size. In the opening rounds Bryant threw powerful bombs that exploded on the chin of Thompson. Bryant's clubbing punches seemed to make audible sounds as they traveled in left-right-left combinations. All
the while Thompson took these punches in stride until the end of the third when a Bryant punch sent him scrambling to the canvas. At this point, the fight changed. After Thompson made the count, he landed some of his most impressive punches of the early rounds. In the forth, Thompson peppered Bryant with four unanswered jabs and then added a straight right hand to Bryant's cheek. Rowland moved away from the power punches and utilized the jab as well. Bryant, late in the forth, threw a jostling combo that consisted of a straight right hand up top, followed by a left to the body, a right to the body and finished with a right to the head. In the fifth Rowland got caught coming inside and was met by a stiff Thompson jab. Bryant returned fire and caught Thompson with a hard right hand which Thompson walked through and countered. In the sixth and final round it was as if Bryant's destructive punches raised a preverbal cloud of smoke which encapsulated his opponent. Once the smoke cleared, Thompson still stood holding his own. Bryant went on to win their bout by a unanimous decision, however, Thompson, fought hard and deserved applause. Final scores were 60-53 | 59-54 | 60-53.
Rubio (5-2, 4 ko's – 133) vs Paz (2-4, 2 ko's – 131.5)
The featured bout of the evening showcased the rematch of super feather Rudy Paz and Jose "Pepe" Rubio. The last bout was a barn burner as Paz stunned Rubio with a final round, seconds out, knockout.
The rematch was war of wills and consisted of 12 minutes of brawling from bell to bell.
Rubio started strong, moving forward and landing punches through Paz's defense. The middle rounds were difficult to score with both fighters throwing and connecting. Rubio landed first in the fourth round but Paz largely controlled the round. Rubio appeared hurt after Paz landed
a series sold right hands and left hooks that drew blood from the nose. Rubio, found himself
cornered against the ropes but eventually managed to stave off another knockout loss in the final round. The fight went to the judges. Scores were 39-37 for Rubio and 38-38 | 38-38. For a majority draw. It seems that a trilogy is in order.
Terry (9-0, 6 ko's – 137) vs Regular (6-24, 3 ko's – 143)
Ira Terry, newly signed to the Prize Fight stable, wasn't in the most appealing fight verses veteran jr. welter, Chris Regular. Terry stalked the southpaw-to-conventional morphing Regular with power
punches only to find himself being held more frequently than being punched. After a wild first
round, Regular appeared to sustain a cut above the right eye at the bridge of the nose. Regular was also warned for hitting during the break by Referee Mike Taylor. Regular was deducted a point
in the fourth round for repeated holding. In the sixth and final round Terry rocked Regular with a jab right hand that dizzied the veteran. Regular's corner, sensing that their fighter was in danger, threw in the towel. He was never in the fight. Official time was 1:29.
Godfrey (3-0, 3 ko's – 205) vs Hunt (11-16, 4 ko's – 202)
East St. Louis' Joell Godfrey TKO'd fellow heavyweight Marvin Hunt in the first stanza. Hunt was down three times and upon the third knock down referee Randy Phillips waived the fight off. Official time was 2:15.
Bobo (14-0, 2 ko's – 130) vs Ponce (11-27, 7 ko's –130.7)
Quick handed featherweight Leon Bobo battled eight rounds with Natalio Ponce in the first bout of the evening. Bobo threw his entire arsenal at Ponce, who absorbed the punches well. In rounds three and four time was called to reinsert Ponce's mouth piece. In the final round things almost got out of hand when the fighters got tangled and Ponce leaned heavily on the off-balanced Bobo. After being separated, it appeared that Ponce raised a hand in an attempt to make good on his action and Bobo threw a sold right hand that landed flush on Ponce's chin. Bobo won this bout, against an overmatched Ponce, by unanimous decision. All three judges scored the fight 80-69. Ponce was never down in the fight but did receive two standing eight counts.

In the Ring – One on One with Brian Young (10-17-06)
By Frank Murtaug, this artical is from Memphis Business Quarterly, Fall 2006 edition

You might say there were 17 million reasons Prize Fight Boxing was honored by Memphis with a key to the city in January 2003. Just seven months earlier, you see, the promoting business run by Brian Young, Russ Young, and Mike Lampley had put together the biggest sporting event in the history of the city: the heavyweight championship fight between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson. Not only did the fight at The Pyramid earn $17 million at the gat, it grossed a record $108 million in pay-per-view revenue. The company’s challenge since then has been matching the standard set on June 8, 2002.

Brian Young, the 40-year old CEO of Prize Fight, grew up in Atlanta and has loved the sport since the first time his father took him to a gym in the seventh grade. He fought in the amateur ranks as a junior welterweight before going to college and eventually earning a master’s in sports administration from Miami’s U.S. Sports Academy.

Upon leaving graduate school, Young worked under the late Dan Duva at Main Events in New Jersey, and was the strength (more)

by Francisco Salazar, photos by Bryan Crowe from Fightnews.com
IAnthony Hanshaw scored an impressive stoppage over hard-punching LaFarrell Bunting in the third round of the main event before a sold-out 1,265 at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, CA. With his victory, Hanshaw advances to the final bracket of the SHOWTIME ShoBox super middleweight tournament.
Hanshaw overwhelmed Bunting with his speed and aggressiveness from the opening bell. Hanshaw consistently scored with his right hand to the head of Bunting numerous times.
Even with a seven-inch reach advantage, Bunting was ineffective with his jab and looked as though he was trying to load up with one punch.
After the first minute in the second round, Bunting connected with a right hand to the body followed by a left hook to the face of an off-balance Hanshaw. The combination knocked Hanshaw backwards into the ropes but Bunting was unable to capitalize. Hanshaw turned on the pressure and was able escape Bunting’s reach. Hanshaw dominated the remainder of the round with his quick hand speed.
Midway into third round, a right hand followed by a combination hurt Bunting. Hanshaw went after Bunting and landed a series of unanswered punches as Bunting tried to back away. Hanshaw battered Bunting in a corner until referee Raul Caiz, Jr. stepped at 1:58 and stopped the bout.

Prize Fight Inks Covington, TN's, Ira Terry! (9-27-06)
By Nate Yoder, Prize Fight Boxing
MEMPHIS, TN – Prize Fight Boxing is proud to announce the signing of Super Featherweight Ira Terrry to an exclusive four-year promotional agreement. Terry 9-0 (6 KO’s) will make his official debut as a member of Prize Fight’s stable on October 21st at The Fitz Casino & Hotel in Tunica, Mississippi. Last month, Terry appeared on Prize Fight’s ESPN2 Friday Night Fight Card from the FedExForum in Memphis, Tennessee and won a unanimous decision. In his young career, Terry fought on five of Prize Fight’s Cards whereby three were televised by ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights. Further, Terry has already been the feature of many news stories around the greater Memphis area as he ascends up the ladder of professional boxing. Presently, the 19-year old sensation is trained by Kenny Adams in Las Vegas, NV and is a recent graduate of Brighton High School in nearby Brighton, TN.

Ira Terry began boxing at the young age of five and turned professional in February of 2006 after a successful amateur career. Prize Fight became interested after his initial professional bout was a first round stoppage of Shane Quinn at FedExForum on the Lamont Peterson versus Jose Moreno undercard February 17, 2006. Over the past seven months, Terry has rattled off eight more consecutive victories displaying ferocious punching power and stamina. Consequently, Terry will campaign as a Super Featherweight. “Ira is going to be a force to be reckoned with at 130 lbs in the very near future. Ira possesses an exciting fan friendly style that will endear fans to him”, promoter Brian Young said about his newly signed boxer. An enthusiastic Terry stated “this is an exciting day in my career and I am pleased to have Prize Fight as my Promoter as they have established themselves as being the promoter of choice for up and coming fighters”. Also, Terry replied “I am honored to be in the same stable as Zab Judah, Ann Wolfe, Freddie Norwood, Lamont Peterson, Anthony Peterson, Ray Whitfield, Antonio Davis, Rowland Bryant, Leon Bobo, and Deandrey Abron. However, I am ready to make my own mark in the Super Featherweight Division”.

Librado Andrade floors Richard 'The Alien' Grant! (9-15-06)
Ringside by Jacob Chavez - From Fightnews.com
8-Count Productions finished off the summer of 2006 with a blast, as the fight show billed "Independence Brawl" had fight fans lined up at the gates of the Aragon Ballroom on Chicago's north side. The exciting night of boxing had an abundance of knockouts and gutsy performances.
The main event of the event featured a 10-round fight in the super middleweight division between Richard “The Alien” Grant (19-15-1, 5 KOs) and Librado Andrade (25-0, 19 KOs).
Although the fight had plenty of action, it was very short-lived due to a first round knockout scored by Andrade.
From the start, Andrade looked to punish Grant. The very first punch that landed for Andrade was a left hook to the head—and it sent Grant staggering off balance against the ropes.
Andrade connected with two more hard left hooks upstairs, moments later and, though he was taking them well, Grant stayed against the ropes and tried to counter.
In the second half of the round, both fighters met near Andrade's corner and began trading violently. At one point, Grant missed with a right cross and was spun towards the ropes by Andrade. It was then that Grant forgot one of the cardinal rules of boxing—“Protect Yourself At All Times.”
Grant pulled his head from under the top rope and turned around, only to be welcomed by a squared-up Andrade who then proceeded to drop bombs on Grant’s face. Grant was immediately rocked but tried for a moment to defend himself.
Unable to do so, he dropped to the canvas.
Badly hurt, he was not able to beat the referee's count. The official time was 2:49.

Peterson Bros victorious! (9-2-06)
By Jason Zimmerman - From Fightnews.com
Both Petersons looked sharp tonight in winning efforts at the Par-a-Dice casino in East Peoria, IL. Anthony (20-0) stayed behind his guard and worked off his sharp jab, opening up the attack in the later rounds and easily controlling a defensive minded Armando Cordoba (21-27-2) to take a unanimous 6 round decision. Lamont (18-0) looked very sharp against rugged Mexican fighter Omar Bernal (25-9-3). Bernal landed good body shots early, but Lamont's speed and movement ultimately proved too much. Peterson mixed his attack well and worked the angles against the forward moving Bernal, ending the fight in the 7th round with a brutal single left hook to the body that crumpled the Mexican to the canvas for the count.
Other results: Mike Gonzalez (8-0) stayed undefeated with a wicked uppercut that stopped Donnell Logan in the 2nd (8-9-2); Brook Dierdorf (1-0) won her pro debut by 2nd round tko over Geboria Mayfield (1-1); Hasson Wasswa (3-4-2) took a unanimous decision over game volume puncher, Miguel Figueroa (2-4-1). McDaniel-Brown a Draw! (8-21-06)
By Randy Hammons Editor/Publisher Florida Boxing News
Wallace McDaniel and 345-pound Gabe Brown smothered one another's punches in their eight-round heavyweight bout Friday night at the Doubletree Hotel enroute to a majority draw.
Most of the time the bout looked more like Ballroom Dancing than a professional fight because of all the holding and hitting. Brown did manage to land an overhand right on occasion, while McDaniel's best work came on short uppercuts with the right hand.
Neither fighter landed a serious enough blow to hurt the other. Two judges had the bout even at 76-76, while the third judge saw Brown winning 78-74. The 6-foot-8-inch McDaniel, a native of Covington, TN., moved to 7-15-1 with 3 KOs. Brown moved to 18-6-2. He has 12 KOs.

Tape being reviewed after Grant-Finger NC! (8-14-06)
Richard The Alien Grant (19-13-1, 5 KO's) from Memphis TN, Traveled to the Ball Park Hilton, St. Louis, MO, last Friday night to oppose Lavell Finger (26-1, 13 KO's) for the Missouri State Super Middleweight Belt. Both fighters climbed into the ring weighing 171 lbs.
In the opening rounds, Grant turned the heat up on Finger, dropping him in the second.
Then In the third it appeared that a Grant right hand landed flush and severely cut Finger's eye.
Finger did not come answer the bell for the fourth stanza which caused the Grant corner to believe they won the fight. The celebration proved a bit premature after referee Marvin Elam spoke with Finger's corner and then ruled a head butt caused the cut, not a punch. At that point the fight was ruled a No Contest.
The Missouri State Boxing Commissioner will be reviewing tape of the Grant vs Finger bout to see what caused the cut. If it can be determined that a punch did cause the cut, Grant will be ruled the winner by TKO. MemphisBoxing.com will keep you posted on this story.
With a win in this fight, Grant will be given a shot September 15th at the W.B.C. number 1 ranked supermiddleweight contender. Librado Andrade 23-0. Grant is currently ranked 12th by the U.S.B.A.

Butler Decisions Wheeler! (8-10-06)
By Bill Luppert – Fightnews.com
Heavyweight Alonzo Butler dominantly shutout Maurice Wheeler over eight rounds Wednesday night at Foxwoods Casino in Mashantuckett, Connecticut. Scores were 80-68 twice and 80-69.
Butler was the aggressor throughout, constantly pushing the out-of-shape Wheeler back.
In the early rounds, Butler wasn't able to put anything in bunches, as Wheeler would clinch every time worked his way in. There was confusion in a break where Wheeler was able to spin Butler around, and when referee Johnny Calis got in-between the two, Butler retaliated with a right hand that knocked the off-balance and unsuspecting Wheeler to the canvas. However, Wheeler was able to get back up unfazed.
In round two, Butler was able to land to Wheeler's body and Wheeler was deducted a point for an intentional headbutt. In the next round, Butler drilled Wheeler with a big right hand, sending him down, only to be held up by the ropes. Calis ruled it a knockdown and administered an eight count.
As the fight wore on, Butler was able to land more effectively, although Wheeler would continue to clinch anytime Butler got in close. Wheeler was deducted a point for the second time in round five, this time for head butting.
Going into the later rounds, Butler seemed to slip into cruise control as he did enough to win, more so from Wheeler not doing anything than Butler doing anything significant. With the win, Butler stays undefeated at (24-0-1, 18 KOs), while Wheeler slips to (10-7-1, 1 KO).

Women to Settle score at Fitz! (8-10-06)
By Nate Yoder, Prize Fight Boxing
Memphis, TN – Prize Fight Boxing returns to the Fitz Casino & Hotel in Tunica, MS on August 26th as they present “The Rematch”, a world class night of boxing headlined by the rematch of Miriam Brakache and Angelica Martinez in a 6-Round female welterweight battle. Previously, on July 8th at The Fitz Brakache and Martinez squared off in what was one of the most exciting bouts ever witnessed at the Fitz. The match was back and forth all night and the crowd was on their feet as the two women exchanged blow after blow for all six rounds of the action packed fight. The bout went to the scorecards where Martinez was awarded a majority decision in the closely contested match. Team Brakache was very unhappy about the decision and felt that they easily won the bout.

“I did not even get a second wind fighting Angelica. One of the judges must have been watching a different fight. We all know when you leave it to the judges you’re giving it away.”– Miriam Brakache

Miriam has been quoted by www.womenboxing.com as saying, “I did not even get a second wind fighting Angelica. One of the judges must have been watching a different fight. We all know when you leave it to the judges you’re giving it away.” Consequently, Team Brakache has been asking for a rematch.

"...just know that you're fighting with the big girls now sweetheart.
So the "losing?" GET USED TO IT!”– Angelica Martinez

Conversely, the normally mild mannered Angelica Martinez is very unhappy about the comments of Brakache and had this to say about her opponent, “You say you want a piece of me? Once again....be careful what you ask for----because next time you won't get a piece. You're going get THE WHOLE THING. Until then, just know that you're fighting with the big girls now sweetheart. So the "losing?" GET USED TO IT!........(I'll be waiting....).”

Peterson Crushes Soto! (8-5-06)
If you've not yet tuned in to watch NABO Lightweight Champion and WBO 7th ranked contender Anthony Peterson (19-0, 13 KO's) in action, maybe its time to do so. Not only will you will find him to be an entertainingly voracious fighter in the ring but you will also find him to be patient and methodical as well.
It was no surprise as Anthony Peterson began knocking opponents out in the early rounds when competition wasn't the most competitive for his class. But, now that Peterson is meeting a tougher breed of fighter, it is surprising to see him step into the ring and chop down this adversary with a couple of left hooks sprinkled with a dazing jab and fancy body movement.
Friday night at FedExForum, Peterson was all of the above when he headlined as the main event on ESPN2 "Friday Night Fights," against the eleven year veteran, Jose Soto, of the Dominican Republic.
With a energized Memphis crowd upwards of 2,500 in attendance, Peterson (
