Kenny
Craven TKO'd by Clifford Etienne In L'ville, KY! (11/30/04)
Last
Saturday night, Kenny Craven (24-14, 22 KO's), Ellisville, MS, stood
toe-to-toe with Clifford "The Black Rhino" Etienne (29-2-2,
20 KO's) at Louisville Gardens, Louisville, KY. Cravens pounded Etienne
and dropped him in round one. In round two Cravens was cut over his
left eye and was unable continue. The fight was called at 1:30 of round
2. Etienne was awarded a TKO victory, however the Craven camp is appealing
that decision. Etienne was a fill in for Riddick Bowe.Clifford "The
Black Rhino" Etienne fought Mike Tyson at the Pyramid in Memphis,
TN, and lost by a 1st round KO in February 2003.
T. Roy Loses Decision to Maldonado due to
cut! (11/30/04)
On
the Bowe/Craven undercard last Saturday night at the Louisville Gardens
in Louisville, KY, Covington, TN, Terrence Roy (6-9), faced off with
unbeaten Super Featherweight, Daniel Maldonado (15-0, 8 KO's). Maldonado
was soundly beating Roy when in round 4 Roy was cut over his eye. Roy
could not continue due to the cut so the referee went to the judges
score cards. Maldonado was ahead on all three cards by a score of 40-36.
Perryman
taken out by Unbeaten Poore! (11/15/04)
Clarksdale,
Ms, heavyweight, Willie Perryman, traveled to South Philadelphia November
12th to battle unbeaten John Poore. Coming into the fight with Perryman,
Poore (217.5lbs.), 33, was 15-0, all wins by way of knockout. Perryman
(256lbs.) came into the fight with the belief that he would be the
first to beat Poore, and not only beat him, but knock him out. Perryman
felt as if his brawling style and punching power would be too much
for Poore. However, Poore turned the tables on Perryman, by knocking
him out at the 1:12 mark of round 4. Perryman falls to 8-7, with 6
KOs. Porre retains his unbeaten status and moves to 16-0, and 16 KOs.
Johnson–Tarver
fight Inked! (11/4/04)
A fight between Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson has just been announced and
it looks like the fight will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Hopes were high that this fight would be held at the FedEx Forum in Memphis,
given the turnout and success of the Jones Jr./Johnson fight last September.
Even without Memphis getting this fight, there are big things on the Horizon
for Memphis Boxing.
Possibility of Riddick
Bowe boxing in Memphis, Slim! (6/4/04)
Former Undisputed Heavyweight Champion
Riddick Bowe (40-1, 1NC, 32 KO's) will return to
boxing on a quest to become champion once again,
but not yet in Tennessee. The 36 year old Bowe
was declined a boxing license in Tennessee after
the Tennessee Boxing and Racing Commission told
the Bowe camp they needed further information on
Bowe's medical condition (brain damage) and more
documentation of Bowe's kidnapping of his wife
and their 5 children in 1998.
Bowe, a 1988 Olympic Silver Medalist and began his career in 1989 mowing down
whoever stepped in his way. Then he met Evander Holyfield, who beat him by
majority decision in 1993 to win the WBA and IBF Heavyweight Titles (Bowe's
3 fights with Holyfield are some of the greatest fight series in recent past).
His last two fights were against Andrew Golata which Bowe won due to DQ of
Golata for hitting below the belt. In 1997, Bowe retired from boxing and temporarily
attended boot camp for Marines. Riddick was released from Prison in May '04
after serving 18 months for domestic violence charges stemming from 1998.

Brian

Brian Young's Prizefight Boxing just signed former Heavyweight Champ Michael
Moorer and word is you might can catch Moorer this week working out at the
DeSoto Athletic Club in Southaven, MS, around 7am.
Bush/Kerry
not the only fight Tuesday night! (11/3/04)
Boxing at the New Daisy was light last night in two respects. A smaller than
average crowd showed up for a short list of fights. For those who got out in
spite of the rain and who managed to pull themselves away from the lure of
the presidential election Boxing on Beale put on 4 fights. Three 4 rounders
and a 10 round main event.
In the 10 RD Middleweight main event, Walter Gilliam (157lbs.) took on Greg
Dickson (160lbs.). Gilliam attacked early, doubling amd tripling up on his
right hooks that set the stage for straight rights to the head of Dickson.
On several occasions Gilliam cornered or caught Dickson against the ropes and
really worked him over. Dickson took a pounding but seemed to be at his best
when his back is to the ropes. Durnig the bout Dickson countered well with
straight rights and hooks. Dickson appeared slow at times and reluctant to
throw his jab, the one punch that Gilliam wasn't defending. Although it was
slow it landed. Dickson also faught this entire fight pretty much on flat feet
that didn't move a lot which allowed Gilliam to tee-off often. Every round
began and ended with Dickson beating Gilliam to the first couple of punches
then for the most part of the round Gilliam stuck it to Dickson. Amazingly,
Dickson preservered the beating that he was receiving and actually hurt Gilliam
(Gilliam grimaces after the shot) with a left hook to the body in RD 9. But
its too little to late for Dickson. Round 10 ends with a spectacular flurry
from both fighters and Dickson fighting with his back to the ropes. Dickson
took a lot of punishment on the ropes but showed a big heart and a strong chin.
Gilliam defeats Dickson, unanimous decision.
Logan
Decisions Journeyman Yarbrough! (11/3/04)
The first fight of the evening featured journeyman fighter Lester Yarbrough
paired against Martez "Too Sweet" Logan in a 4 RD Middleweight bout.
The fight began with Logan overpowering and out punching Yarbrough. Every shot
Logan threw was quick, accurate and deliberate. "Too Sweet" continued
to go to Yarbrough's body with combos that opened up Yarbrough's guard and
Logan landed clean shots to his head. Throughout the fight Logan stalked the
slow, pawing Yarbrough. Yarbrough got in a few clean thumbing shots of his
own like one in RD 3 when he caught Logan in the body with a chopping right
hook to the body. But for the most part Lester endured a punishing from Logan.
Logan wins the 4 rounder by unanimous decision.
One comment on Logan is that in this fight he stayed within himself and didn't
try and get Yarbrough out of there as quickly as possible. He took his time
and fought his fight.
Heavyweights Collide in Pro Debuts! (11/3/04)
In other New Daisy action new comers Courtney Johnson and Mike Posey debuted
in a heavyweight clash. Johnson tipped the scales at 255lbs and his opponent
Posey weighed in at 240lbs. Wild but exciting. This grappling battle started
with both fighters looking awkward but determined as they threw punches with
everything they had. During the first round the crowd loved it as the pair
took turns tossing and throwing each other to the canvas (none ruled knockdowns).
In the second stanza Johnson was very active and charged and chased Posey around
the ring. Posey was hit with a few shots but none that hurt him. Likewise,
Johnson took some punches that leave him bleeding from the mouth but none that
look to have taken a toll on him. What did take a toll on Johnson was his conditioning.
He took a knee, out of sheer exhaustion, abd made it up on the count of 8.
Posey and Johnson then exchange a few shots and Johnson took another knee.
This time Allen Luvell calls the fight on account hat Johnson can not continue
after making the count. Posey wins his First by 2 RD KO.
Bunting
Kayos Anthony in 1! (11/3/04)
Fight three of the evening featured Cruiserweight Lafarrel Bunting (188lbs.)
who gave up 60+ plus pounds to Richard Anthony (249lbs.) Shortly after the
bell for round one Bunting goes to work on the large but slow Anthony. Anthony
is throwing punches but they are wild and not many land. Bunting is just the
opposite, not throwing many but when he does it lands with a thud. Bunting,
catches Anthony with a quick left hook to the body and Anthony drops to a knee.
After the count Anthony continues to fight and Lafarrel closes in again and
drops the wounded Anthony to a knee with another well placed body shot. Anthony
makes the count but wants no more. Bunting wins by TKO RD 1.
Put
Down the remote this Tuesday Night! (11/1/04)
Last month the MLB playoffs
may have kept you in rather than heading to the New Daisy
for a healthy dose of testosterone. This month they only
reason to stay away from fight night would be to watch
the presidential election. Go vote tomorrow and then
come down to Beale Street for some boxing rather than
stay glued to the tube to see who wins the Presidential
election. You can find out who your President is when
you get home. Thanks for being
patient while our host was down for maintenance.
Bunting
stops Ward! (10/6/04)
By
Scotti Vandevender - Fightnews.com
This month at Memphis’ New Daisy
Theater, light heavyweight headliner LaFerrel “Fabulous
Fairway” Bunting (6-1-1, 6 KOs) closed the show in
grand style via knockout victory over Charlie Ward (7-21,
5 KOs).
Bunting stormed out from the opening bell, firing a left uppercut into Ward’s
ribcage. Ward fell into the ropes for knockdown number one. Ward
up righted himself only to receive further bludgeoning as Bunting struck a
left hook around the waistline.
Ward fell to the canvas as referee Clay Huddleston asked timekeeper Rod Cardoni
and the commissioners if the blow was low or not, then proceeded to begin his
ten count when they shook their heads no.
But Ward held his own for the next few rounds, taking punches from Bunting
well, while slipping quite a few. Then in round seven, Bunting unleashed
a left hook as Ward marched into it. Ward fell like a rock on his back as referee
Clay Huddleston ceased his count at 5 and waved the bout off at 1:17 in round
seven.
Pillow
Stops Gilliam! (10/6/04)
By
Scotti Vandevender - Fightnews.com
In a lightweight bout, Jerome Pillow (13-0,
10 KOs) gave up almost twenty pounds to Walter Gilliam (1-9-1,
1 KO) and still managed to out power him. Pillow landed much
more accurate punches in the first three rounds but was questionably
deducted a point for a single low blow in the round.
In response to the deduction, Pillow charged forward in round four and landed
combo after combo on the defenseless Gilliam until referee Clay Huddleston
performed a standing eight count. Waving his finger in front of Gilliam,
Huddleston asked him to follow his finger. To that Gilliam stared blankly straight
ahead and the bout ended in yet another KO win for the slick punching Pillow,
who seems to have trouble finding a challenging opponent in the local circles.
Goings
Outlasts Adams for 4th Pro Win! (10/6/04)
By
Scotti Vandevender - Fightnews.com
In
what read as a light heavyweight bout on the bout sheets, Jim Goings
(4-0, 2 KOs) weighed in at 201 lbs. and squared off against 180-lb.
Carlos Adams in an ugly slugfest. By the end of round two Goings bled
from the nose but Adams’ tank looked to be running low.
Goings won a majority decision as Adams spent the final two rounds trying to
tie Goings up in between gasping for air through a gaping mouth.
Johnson
vs Watson a Draw! (10/6/04)
By
Scotti Vandevender - Fightnews.com Middleweight
Lamont Johnson (1-3-3, 1 KO) looked to add to his win column against
newcomer Caleb Watson, but the result left him with yet another draw.
Johnson entered his game self but again could not quite perform well
enough for a victory.
Johnson landed early, but then Watson worked behind a quick, stiff left jab.
The problem for Watson surfaced after the jab, as his attack remained almost
completely void of a right hand to create a one-two combination.
The scorecards reflected the evenness and both fighters lack of quality exchanges
38-39 Johnson, 40-38 Watson, and 38-38.
Grubbs
Down in 1st, Hangs on to KO Dowdy! (10/6/04)
By
Scotti Vandevender - Fightnews.com
In
a light heavyweight bout that matched Joe Grubbs in his pro debut against
Tyrone Dowdy (0-2).
Dowdy stormed out from the bell ripping a left uppercut that sent Grubbs into
the ropes for a knockdown. But Grubbs arose and began to land of his own accord,
ending the round with a strong right hand.
Then in round 3 a barrage of punches lead to a standing eight count on the
tiring Dowdy. Grubbs followed that with another uppercut to the ribcage
and Dowdy fell halfway through the ropes doubled over ending the bout at 2:56
of round three.
Futes
No match for Robertson ! (10/6/04)
By
Scotti Vandevender - Fightnews.com
In
the opening bout of the evening, Clifton Robertson (1-0, 1 KO) debuted
against Javier Futes (0-1) in impressive fashion. Robertson dropped
Futes with a straight right hand. Then when Futes arose Robertson
struck again with a right hook and Futes fell again, shaking his head
no to referee Allan Lovell when asked if he wanted to continue. New

Marteze
Logan Loses UD in New York! (10/5/04)
After a stunning personal victory over Hector
Camacho, Jr. (37-1-1, 21 KOs) in Kinder Louisiana,
Marteze “Too Sweet” Logan (14-9-1, 2
KOs) attemped to change the direction of Koba "The Cobra" Gogoladze's
(16-0, 7 KO's) career last Thursday night at the Manhattan Center, New
York City.
According
to the Judges' score cards (80-71 | 79-72 | 78-73), Logan (Covington,
TN) managed to steal a few rounds from Gogoladze (Philadelphia, PA),
but in the end the decision was unanimous for Gogoladze who improves
to 16-0.
Memphis “Shakes Up” Boxing! (8/25/04)
By Scotti Vandevender -
Fightnews.com
The brand new FedExForum in Memphis, TN opened its arms to its inaugural sporting
event in grand fashion here last night. A crowd of almost 14,000 packed
into the impressive new arena.
Roy Jones (49-3, 38 KOs) stated all along he intended to bring a show to Memphis
to regain his title against IBF Light Heavyweight Champion Glengoffe Johnson
(41-9-2, 28 KOs). He excited the Memphis community with his promises
of entertainment and did not disappoint. Only the end proved much different
than the crowd or he anticipated.
As the music boomed and Jones started his slow prance into the ring behind
a rapper from his own personal label, the crowd erupted. He entered the
ring as smoke and pyrotechnics blasted the air. While it may have seemed
Jones had already started ahead in this fight, Johnson already had surprises
for Mr. Jones.
Johnson provided Jones and everyone in attendance with the first surprise as
famous rapper Ice-T led him into the ring. Like foreshadowing in a fiction
novel, the hint of what lay ahead loomed over the crowd as they began to realize
Johnson came here to entertain as well.
As round one opened, Johnson charged Roy, sending him into retreat mode against
the ropes, hands held high around his ears. Johnson easily took the round
with relentless pursuit, landing several shots to Jones’ skull. Where
was the Jones of old, the escape artist that never seemed to get hit? Where
was the man that Vinny Pazienza did not even hit once in a round during their
bout.
Johnson ensured that man never showed up. Even as Jones flurried in rounds
two and three, including a big left hook and barrage of body shots, Johnson
absorbed them and continued forward.
While Jones continued the rope-a-dope act ala Muhamed Ali, Johnson took advantage
of every opportunity. Entering the ninth round Johnson led on all scorecards
(Fightnews had it scored 77-75) and Jones was in dire need of digging deep
to try and extra victory from the beating he was receiving.
But, Johnson had other plans. “I looked for him with the left hook. I
waited and got no response so I hit him again (with the right). What
can I say? I threw the right hand, it hit him on the chin, and that’s
it,” Johnson relayed after the fight.
As Jones fell limp to the canvas, out cold before his head ever hit the canvas,
the end of an era sounded with a thud on the canvas like a bell rung in a silent
night. The crowd stilled and quiet, watched as Jones lay motionless on
the canvas unable to move. The time of the knockout was: 48 seconds into
the ninth round.
“ Nobody knows I have a knockout punch because nobody sees me fight,” explained
IBF light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson after his stunning ninth round knockout
of Roy Jones, Jr. on Saturday at the FedExForum in Memphis, TN. “I
fight overseas a lot. I'm always a road warrior. It doesn't matter
if I get the respect or not, let's just get in the ring. I stay focused
and do what I have to do."
The absence of Jones at the post-fight conference, who was transported to the
Regional Medical Center in Memphis for testing and observation after suffering
a concussion due to the knockout, did not put a damper on the celebration of
Johnson and his team.
The triumphant Johnson said to the fans and press in the room, "It’s
a great night for me! I just wanted to make a statement that I'm a real
fighter. I don't try to look cute. I just wanted to get the job
done. I felt that if the knockout came that's great, but I did not care. I
just wanted to win."
Johnson proved his durability and worth in the ring and thanked the city of
Memphis for welcoming him with such open arms. “I will fight in
Memphis any time,” he proclaimed.
" I beat him at his own game," observed Johnson, a native of Clarendon,
Jamaica who fights out Miami. "A lot of guys try to fight Roy from the outside,
but I wanted to stay in on him."
Johnson proclaimed, “I’ll fight anybody. I’m not the
best but I’ll fight anybody. I have had a tough career. I came
through the back door. I am not one to say I am always the best. I'm
the guy willing to fight the self-proclaimed best."
Johnson was asked about a showdown with middleweight king Bernard Hopkins at
168 pounds, to which he responded, “It's up to my management but if my
body can do it, I will." This scenario seems highly unlikely anytime
soon since Hopkins has stated that he wishes to make twenty defenses of his
middleweight crown before considering moving up in weight.
WBC / WBA champion Antonio Tarver was invited to the podium by promoter Dan
Goossen as Johnson concluded his speech to press.
" I hope Roy retires,” bluntly stated Tarver. “He needs
to stay home and take care of himself. I give him (Jones) all the credit
in the world but I don't want him to get hurt. I want to see Roy enjoy
his life after boxing (and) ride off into the sunset."
In November 2003, Jones moved back down to the 175-pound division after his
historic capture of the WBA heavyweight crown and regained the light heavyweight
title from Antonio Tarver in the first of their two fights. Subsequently, Tarver
knocked out Jones in the second round of their rematch in May.
Tarver wasted no time in challenging Johnson: "I feel like he has
something of mine. We have to sell tickets Glenn. You have one
of my belts. Come on HBO, let's get it on."
Alton Merkerson, the long-time trainer of Jones, stated to the press the knockout
could signal the end of his career. "That's something he and I are
going to have to talk about," Merkerson said. "He's getting hit now
more than he used to get hit."
While a unification bout with Tarver may also lie ahead, Johnson can rest assured
Saturday night he was the best in the world. Tarver contends the belt
is rightfully his, that he voluntarily gave it up. But for now it resides
firmly around the waist of the man who left Memphis and the rest of the world “All
Shook Up.”
The total attendance on Saturday at the FedExForum was 13, 047. The promoters
were Square Ring, Inc. and Goossen Tutor Promotions, in association with Prize
Fight Boxing and Grand Casinos Tunica.
Choko
hernandez Topples Too Sharp! (8/27/04)
By Scotti Vandevender -
Fightnews.com
Mark “Too Sharp” Johnson (44-4, 28 KOs) entered the ring as the
WBO champion and self proclaimed best 115-pound fighter in the world “bar
none.” But, 21-year-old Ivan “Choko” Hernandez (19-0-1,
13 KOs) came to prove otherwise as he fought a courageous fight from the start.
Hernandez began the fight charging forward, stunning the champ with a straight
right hand that staggered Johnson backward, immediately letting Johnson know
this would be no easy fight.
“ I knew when I landed the first right hand that I could do it. I
knew with my heart, my determination, that I could win the fight,” Hernandez
later revealed strictly to Fightnews.
While Johnson pressed the action in the second and third rounds, Hernandez
proved willing to stand toe-to-toe and trade power shots as the two traded
arsenals of uppercuts, and hooks in close quarters. Hernandez continued
to come forward through the fourth as he landed a shot to the chest that momentarily
shook Johnson. Hernandez pressed forward again into the sixth round when
Johnson took charge.
Johnson turned up the heat as his punches started landing on the young Hernandez
in succession. Johnson landed a huge overhand right, followed by a left
that wobbled Hernandez. Johnson then landed punch after punch, loading
up on each shot. Looping overhand punches and uppercuts thundered across
Hernandez’s skull as he held onto Johnson to end the sixth.
With the recover power of Holyfield in his prime, Hernandez charged forward
to begin round seven as if unaffected by the round before. “I felt
the punches hard in round six. I can take nothing away from Johnson. My
heart said keep going.”
Hernandez then blasted Johnson with a straight right hand that immediately
sat him on his rear. Johnson looked to his corner and smiled, up righting
himself at the count of eight. Then Hernandez continued to apply pressure.
Relentless and pursuant of the champion, Hernandez continued unleashing punch
after punch. Then Hernandez thundered a right uppercut to Johnson’s
ribcage and down he went. Felled and on all fours, Johnson could not
raise from the canvas for close to a minute as referee Armando Garcia counted
him out a 2:42 of round eight, leaving Ivan “Choko” Hernandez the
new WBO Junior Bantamwieght champion.
After the fight jubilant manager Jesse Mercado specifically sought out Fightnews
for the prime story while also interpreting for the Spanish-speaking Hernandez. “He
(Hernandez) is only 21 years old. This is just his 20th fight! He
has a long career ahead of him!”
“ I can not believe it. Thank God. I have a solid team. The
addition of Ronny Shield helped me find weak spots. Our plan was to pressure
Mark,” Hernandez said. “Super flyweights are avoiding each
other. We knew what we had. We knew we were ready to fight the best
in the world. I was 51-5 in the amateurs and knew I could do it.”
While Mercado seeks to have his fighter unify the belts at 115 pounds, Hernandez
would like to handle some unfinished business of his own via a match up with
fellow Mexican fighter Fernando Montiel. “I would like to fight
Montiel. Montiel said Johnson was fighting a nobody. What do you
thing now Montiel? I have beaten the best fighter in the world,” Hernandez
stated.
I would like to thank Jesse Mercado for the exclusive interview and wish
him and his fighter the best.
D.
Logan (7-1-1, 5 KO's), tough to See that "O" go. (9/27/04)
Last
Saturday night, while most fight fans we're just thinking about heading
toward the FedEx Forum, the fights had already begun. One of those
fights was the Darnell Logan (7-0-1, 5 KO's) of Covington, TN, vs.
Mario Lacey (5-7-3, 5 KO's) from Mobile, AL. The bout began with both
fighters trading shots in the center of the ring. Logan was able to
get off good shots to the head and body but Lacey took them well.Towards
the end of round 2 Lacey floored Logan with a hard right hook that
landed flush to the head. Logan took his time getting off the canvas
and when he finally gained his senses and lifted himself up, his legs
were too wobbley and the referee called the fiight at 2:54 of round
2.
Montana
wins rematch over Brown! (8/27/04)
By Scotti Vandevender - Fightnews.com
Former cruiserweight contender Saul Montana (41-12, 36 KOs) decisioned Gabe
Brown (15-5-1, 9 KOs) in a heavyweight contest on Saturday at the FedExForum
as part of the non-televised undercard in support of the Glen Johnson vs. Roy
Jones Jr. showdown. Brown, whose weight exceeded the 350-pound limit of the
scales on Friday, had no answer to the sticking and moving style of Montana.
Montana (229) was able to stay on the outside and potshot the plodding, blubbery
Brown at will throughout the fight. Brown got the crowd cheering for him in
the third when he swayed his enormous hips in hula hip fashion at the advancing
Montana. The cheering turned into laughter soon afterwards which was replaced
by booing moments later. The sixth round was the only round that Brown showed
any offensive initiative. Brown was able to briefly close the gap and go toe-to-toe
with Montana during the sixth round but Montana retreated into ropes to escape
the assault. Montana was hurt during the exchange but
Brown ran out of gas before he could capitalize. The nose of Brown was
busted up by pecking jab of Montana during the middle rounds. Montana went on
to win a unanimous ten-round decision. This fight was a rematch of their November
2003 affair in which both fighters were down in the opening round but it was
Brown who TKO’ed Montana in the first round.
John Johnson Faces toughest opponent yet! (8/27/04)
By Scotti Vandevender
- Fightnews.com
Undefeated light heavyweight John Johnson
(6-0, 5 KOs) had a tougher time than anticipated in winning
a decision over Martin Verdes (6-4, 3 KOs). Johnson, an
outstanding amateur, was caught a few times by Verdin during
the four
round contest but Johnson was never in danger. A left hook
sent Verdin crashing to the canvas midway into the first
round. Verdin recovered but the southpaw Johnson kept the
pressure on with thudding left hooks. Verdin suffered a
nasty gash below his right eye during the third round and
a vicious
assault at the end of the round had Verdin hanging onto
the ropes. Johnson won a unanimous decision with all of the
judges’ scorecards
reading 40-35.
Memphis
eyes a new “King”
By Scotti Vandevender - Fightnews.com
Fight night at the FedEx Forum now resides just 48 hours away and the hype
and excitement is already creating waves in the city of Memphis. The
final press conference for the highly anticipated fight between IBF Light heavyweight
champion Glengoffe Johnson (40-9-2, 27 KOs) and Roy Jones Jr. (49-2, 38 KOs)
went off without a hitch today, with all those involved in attendance. As
Roy Jones, Jr. himself indicated, not even a hurricane could keep him away
from this fight.
Brian Young of Prize Fight Boxing kicked things off by thanking the city of
Memphis for its support in helping bring the fight to the city and Jones later
continued his thoughts stating, “I love the support and treatment everyone
has shown me and my opponent here in Memphis. It’s something when
you can say that about yourself AND your opponent’s peoples.”
Mark “Too Sharp” Johnson (44-3, 28 KOs) then took the podium and
wasted no time in proclaiming that he has never lost a world championship fight.
“ I am the best 115-pound fighter in the world. Bar None!”
Aside from two back-to-back losses to Rafael Marquez, Johnson has not lost
a fight in over 14 years. Saturday he will put his WBO Jr. Bantamweight
title on the line against Ivan “Choco” Hernandez (18-0-1, 12 KOs),
a crafty, yet unknown, Mexican fighter with a high activity rate and an untested
chin.
After Glen Johnson’s manager paid his respect to the Jones camp and thanked
everyone for the opportunity his fighter now receives on the world stage, Roy
Jones Jr. stepped up to the microphone informing everyone, “I’m
back. I’m bringing a whole show for ya’ll, not just a fight.”
Question and answer periods left floods of questions to the superstar Jones
with the IBF champ Glengoffe Johnson seemingly happy to play the reserve role. Johnson
is a man of few words and seemed to have no problem with the attention falling
on Jones’ shoulders.
Fightnews participated in the question and answer period and relays the following:
Roy what about your decision to fight a champion on your first fight back (from
the first loss)?
I want to fight a champion. I need a challenge. I don’t want
to fight someone everybody knows I’m gonna beat.
Did you approach the Johnson camp for this fight?
Yeah, I wanted the fight. I said Ok, if Tarver don’t want to come
and talk to me right now I’ll go fight Glengoffe Johnson. I want
to fight another champion. He’s got one of my belts. Most
people don’t know about Glen Johnson. I do. I know he’s
good. He fought Clinton Woods twice and won the title. Clinton
Woods doesn’t go down easy.
People don't know about Glen Johnson because he was a late bloomer. But
then again, people didn't think Tarver had much of a chance either. Johnson's
older, which means he has more experience. He's also smart and he's got
good power.
I don't know what kind of punch he can take - but it better be a good one.
Roy, you said you’re bringing a whole show. Tell us about that.
I’m bringing the whole show. An entrance into the ring. I
gotta make people enjoy themselves.
After Saturday night do you think you’ll have another fight with Tarver?
Well, I don’t know. You got Tarver. You got Hopkins. You
got Klitzscko. All three I’ll take. Klitschko on the other
hand. I ain’t supposed to be able to beat him. I love that. I
love doing what I’m not supposed to be able to do. This is not
about Tarver this is about Roy. The only way people will listen to him
- by saying my name.
Who beat Ruiz since I beat him? Rahman didn't beat him. Oquendo
didn't beat him. No one could beat him. Who beat Hopkins since
I beat him? No one. It starts right here!
Following the question and answer period, Fightnews had the opportunity to
get some feedback from heavyweight contender Dommic Guinn who expects to see
a Roy Jones Jr. knock out. When asked about receiving his first career
loss Guinn states, “It’s not out of my mind. I’m sitting
over here thinking I know what Roy Jones is going through. But, I don’t
expect it to go past 4.”
Guinn continued to state he'll back back in December as he continues to work
hard to get back to where he was stood - only a fight or two from a title shot. "In
a year or two my goal is to be heavyweight champ. Bet your money on me. I'll
be back," Guinn firmly stated in his soft-spoken, Southern Arkansas style.
Mark “Too Sharp” Johnson shared his thoughts with Fightnews on
his young opponent. “Young guys are courageous. I know. I
used to be that guy. But I will never look past a fight. Never. I
hope to fight anyone 126 pounds and under. I might call out Roy after
this fight,” ‘Too Sharp’ said smiling.
With that the press conference closed today in a city that is currently all
about Roy. As Mr. Jones prepares himself for the first step towards regaining
his throne as one of boxing’s pound-for-pound best, he boasts a promise
to entertain and ensure that everyone enjoys the show. In a town ripe
with love for past celebrity and in search of a new “King” of the
city, Roy Jones Jr. stands in perfect position to earn such an honorary title.
As he has often proved himself to be the “King” of entertaining
entrances and showy prances to the apron, the first question to the rest of
Roy Jones’ career inside the ring will be answered in less than two days. Very
soon we begin to find out if Roy Jones Jr. still reigns as “King” of
the boxing ring.

Jones Jr. vs Johnson, Days Away! (9/21/04)
By: JD Meredith
Memphis is days away from one of the biggest
fights in its history. Do you have your tickets to Roy Jones Jr. vs.
Glen Johnson at the FedEx Forum, Saturday night in Memphis, TN? If you
do, congratulations, you are going to see some great fights. 10 to be
exact. If you don't have tickets, but take an interest in Boxing, buy
a pair of tickets to this fight and help establish Memphis as a boxing
community.
Memphis has received 2 Heavyweight Championship mega-fights, in Tyson/Lewis
and Tyson/Etienne, since 2002. Now with the arrival of Roy Jones Jr., who until
recently was considered by the majority of fight fans and fight commentators
alike to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Memphis adds another
huge fight to its historical fight card. (cont'd)
Why is this fight anticipated?
Roy Jones Jr. (49-2, 38 KO's) promotes himself, he cuts tracks, he has a line
of clothes, he just got knocked out for the first time...ever! Fact is Jones
Jr. is an exciting fighter to watch. He's been in the sport for years and has
lost little to father time. Whether you love him or hate him, he's a great
fighter whose name is branded on the sport of boxing for all eternity. When
a fighter loses a fight, especially the way Jones Jr. lost his last fight to
the right hand of Antonio Tarver (KO 2, 2004), it changes his plan. Saturday
night in Memphis, you will see a different side of RJ Jr. A new side of him
that has seen the blurry vision and cloudy head of a nasty knock out. Don't
misinterpret what is being said, he will not be scared, but maybe cautious.
Fighting by way of Miami, FL, Glengoffe "Gentleman" Johnson (40-9-2,
27 KO's) is an not only and impressive Journeyman fighter, he also is the reigning
IBF Light Heavyweight Champion. He has been in the ring with many great fighters
the likes of Clinton Woods, Derrick Harmon, Syd Vanderpool, Sven Ottke and
current Undisputed, Unified Middleweight Champion of the World, Bernard Hopkins,
who delivered Johnson's his only KO (KO 1, 1997). Having only been KO'd once
in his career, it is certain that Johnson will be coming to fight.
Cravens fought "the
Dragon" in Hungary! (9/13/04)
Heavyweight Kenny Craven (Ellisville,
Ms), traveled to Budapest, Hungary, to face-off
with "The Dragon", Albert Sosnowski.
The fight, on the undercard of the Artur Grigorian
vs Laszlo Herczeg, was held at the 15,000 seat
Kisstadion. Sosnowski, who fights by way of Warsaw,
Poland was 33-1, 21KO's coming into the fight with
the 25-12, 22Ko's of Cravens. Sosnowski (25yrs),
had a one inch height advantage standing at 6'2
1/2" and just over a 10lb. weight advantage,
weighing in at 236 1/2 lbs. to Cravens' 224 3/4lbs.
Cravens (33yrs) held a 3 inch advantage with an
80" reach. Sosnowski, was the domineering
fighter last saturday. Taking quick control over
Cravens with thundering powershots. In the 2nd
stanza of their meeting, Cravens was KO'd by the
fire of "The Dragon". Sosnowski's record
improved to 34-1, with 22KO's and Cravens' fell
to 25-13, with 22KO's. Cravens last fought in July
when he defeated Charles Daughtry by TKO, at the
Beau Rivage Casino, Biloxi, MS.
No
chopping block for "El Gallo"! (9/13/04
Nashville, TN's, Marty Robbins, faced some adversity
in Philly saturday night. That adversity was the 16-1 Jose "El Gallo" Reyes
(El Gallo = Rooster). Robbins fought diligently through the 8 round contest,
but eventually lost a majority decision to the Rooster. Robbins' record
falls to 18-24-1, 16KO's.

IV" between Hecter Camacho, Jr. and Marteze Logan in the main
event at Grand Casino Coushatta, Kinder, Louisiana. Camacho, Jr.,
in what supposed to be a tune-up bout for a future title shot, was
met with strong opposition from a thirsty Logan (14-8-1, 2 KOs).
Logan fought Camacho (37-1-1, 21 KOs) to a majority draw in front
of a sellout crowd of more than 5000 fight fans.
Roy
Jones Jr. Speaks from Memphis! (8/25/04)
On his future in Boxing & his fight with Glen Johnson.
By Scotti Vandevender - Fightnews.com
Hurricane Bonnie may have KO’d Roy Jones Jr.’s plans
to attend the initial press conference kicking off his bid to regain
the IBF Light Heavyweight
championship, but today Roy Jones, Jr. held his own personal media festivity
the way he likes it - on his own terms.
While Roy doesn’t always take the keenest interest in promoting his fights,
he certainly knows who butters his boxing bread so to speak. Roy understands
the importance of his business relationships outside of the boxing ring. The
ex-champ took time out to tour his sponsor Nike’s distribution warehouses
in Memphis, TN and worked in a little press coverage in the process.
Roy took his time in arriving then took time to share his thoughts on training,
basketball, the Olympics, Don King promotions, and other topics with all in attendance.
He explained his favorite style of training consists of basketball and more basketball
as the interaction with the crowd works to motivate and encourage him more than
training in the ring or gym.
“As a matter of fact the best condition I’ve been ever been in was
when I fought Lou De Valle. I only trained real boxing training for two
weeks,” Roy stated to the press.
Roy compared the questionable scoring in the Olympics to a Don King fight. “I
wouldn’t care if my kid grew up to go to the Olympics. Nobody cares
anymore. It’s like watching five or six Don King fights and every
one of them ends up in a draw. It’s the same thing and it’s
destroying a kid’s dream.”
He then continued by praising his opponent Johnson. “Glen is a good
fighter. He’s a very strong fighter. People don’t understand
that he’s very durable. He’s gonna’ keep coming at you.”
After a brief question and answer period it was off to shoot some basketball
as the start to a whirlwind tour of Memphis. Fightnews was able to catch up with
the sports superstar for a couple of words from him en route to the Nike
gymnasium:
Roy, are you looking forward to returning to the ring?
Oh yeah. I almost feel like last time I got paid for nothing,
I wasn’t
out there long enough (laugh).
Roy, what is your motivation coming into this fight?
To be honest with you, my whole motivation this time is that God has a plan for
me. I know he has a plan for me. A lot of people never get to the top, never
know what it’s like. Take Mike Tyson, when he came down
he couldn’t get back to the top. God brings even the best people down to
see if they will remain faithful and go back up.
What are your future plans?
I’m actually gonna beat this boy, go stop Tarver, then probably see who
wins the Hopkins – De la Hoya fight. I may go back to 168.”
How about your music career, do you have a new CD coming out?
Yeah, we got a new CD coming out. As a matter of fact we have the new CD coming
out three days after the fight, Sept. 28. We’ve got one of the songs
on the album that they’re going to bring me into the ring to. I’m
gonna start back entertaining, totally entertaining. People talked me out
of being entertaining.
Can we expect and entrance like you entered the Clinton Woods fight?
Yeah! You know, I gotta bring one of those to Memphis.
The Glen Johnson camp claims you’re doing too much to take the fight seriously.
What’s
your take? It’s better when I do too much. For the last Tarver fight I
wasn’t doing nothing, and look what happened. I probably should have been
doing some extra stuff, then maybe I would have been better focused for it. When
I have too much to do I operate best. That’s always been the way
for me. If I ain’t got nothing to do I’m not interested. I’m
gonna be doing too much. I will be doing too much inside the ring and outside
of it. I’m gonna put on a show before, in the ring, and after. But,
when I’m in the ring we’ll find out what kind of chin he’s
got.
Hopkins exploited it.
Did Hopkins knock him out? Ah, you shouldn’t have
told me that. Now
he’s GOT to go to sleep!
If Ididn’t have a plan for the fight,
I got one now.
With all that activity you don’t sound like a 35-year-old boxer.
I don’t look like one either! I’m just happy to be able to be back
in the ring. I’m happy that Memphis opened its arms to me to come
out. Even the radio stations here have been playing my music and I really
appreciate that. I love opening new arenas. I love doing different
things, opening them up to boxing.
And with that Jones hit the court where he landed nine of his first ten shots
from the field adorned in blue jeans and a button down. On Sept. 25, at the brand
new, state-of-the-art FedEx Forum in Memphis, TN, we shall all see if he can
still land his shots on the apron like he did before his first professional knockout
loss, and the subsequent fall from his lengthy reign as the pound-for-pound best
in the world.
August
New Daisy "Fight of the Month" (8/23/04)
The votes are in and tallied for the
August "Fight of the Month" at the New Daisy.
August's fight winner...Chris Burford vs. Darnell Logan.
Burford and Logan fought an exciting 10RD Light Welterweight
main event on August 3, 04. There were several hard shots
delivered from both fighters but none landed effectively
enough to merit a knockdown. A very skilled Logan went
on to win by unanimous decision over Burford. With the
win, Logan improves his record to (6-0-1, 4KO). Burford's
record falls to (5-23-1, 4KO).

Jones
Jr. vS. Johson Press Conference! (8/11/04)
By Scotti Vandevender - Fightnews.com
The press conference for Roy Jones, Jr. (49-2)
versus Glengoffe Johnson (40-9-2, 27 KOs) to kick off the process
for the IBF Light heavyweight championship began and ended without
Roy Jones in attendance. Grounded by Hurricane Bonnie in Pensacola,
FL, the ex-champ missed the first step in his self-titled “get
back” process...
Representatives from Square Ring, Goosen Tutor, Prize Fight Boxing, and Grand
Casino all played their part in welcoming the fight to Memphis, TN as Mayor Willie
Herengton welcomed boxing to Memphis with open arms. “Memphis can
be a major fight city” he commented and ended by calling on the boxing
community saying “let’s make it happen.”
Glen Johnson promoter Dan Goosen presented the most outspoken comments as he
stated that Roy Jones not only made a huge mistake in taking the second fight
with Antonio Tarver but that this fight with Johnson would be a mistake as well. “Roy
Jones agrees with us, you’ll notice during this whole press conference
Roy Jones has not rebutted one time,” Goosen said jokingly as he motioned
to the empty seat adorning a Roy Jones Jr. nameplate.
Johnson’s trainer, Orlando Cuellar boldly stated “We’re very
grateful Roy Jones gave is this opportunity, but he made the wrong choice.” He
continued by telling Fightnews their game plan is to engage Roy. “We
will apply pressure and volume, hurt him as much as we can. We are ready
for 12 rounds and will work every round.”
Glengoffe Johnson chimed in with his Jamaican accent telling his trainer to hold
back on the strategy, jokingly saying he was going to give away all their secrets. Johnson
then proceeded to tell me he was ready to fight. “As long as he shows
up, I’m ready to fight. I don’t want no excuses. I want
the best Roy Jones to show up. I want to fight the best.”
I also had the opportunity to catch up with Roy Jones Jr.’s trainer Alton
Merkerson for a couple of questions:
Alton, you mentioned that Roy is continually learning, what did he learn from
the last fight (with Antonio Tarver)?
Roy learned that he can’t move into his opponent’s left hand when
throwing. He has always challenges southpaws’ left hands. He
just got caught that time. Just like Nigel Benn versus (Iran) Barkley. They
both threw at the same time, it’s just that Barkley got hit.
Alton, I’m 34 years old and I know I’m not as quick as I was even
a few years ago. Has Roy lost some of his speed and quickness and is it
a factor?
Roy has always been excellent at escaping punches. I don’t think his quickness
is a problem. He is still the best in the business at escaping punches.
After his last fight Roy stated he could not get up for light heavyweight fights
anymore, yet here we are preparing for the IBF Light Heavyweight title fight. Explain?
Roy has unfinished business. I believe he called it “get back.”
So, this is the first step in the “get back” process then?
Yes, Roy plans on winning this title, then taking care of unfinished business. Roy
still takes his time in the gym and works hard. He just has unfinished
business.
What about the future for Roy Jones, Jr.? Will we see him at heavyweight?
We’re gonna stay here for a while (at light heavyweight). Roy probably
has 3 or 4 more fights, if that many. All fighters wear down as time goes
by. Do you know that out of the 1988 Olympic team Roy was on there is not
one other active fighter? Roy is a young businessman as well and he realizes
where he is and where he wants to go.
Alton continued to name every fighter from that 1988 Olympic team and their weight
division to further illustrate his point.
Roy Jones, even in absence at this press conference, stands on the ledge one
leap away from a great comeback, or a fall resulting in the end of a legacy. Only
time will tell if he is able to return to dominance and go out on top as is his
goal. On September 25 at the newly constructed FedEx Forum in Memphis,
TN we’ll witness the next step in the Roy Jones “get back” process,
or a lack thereof.
Local fan favorite and light heavyweight newcomer John Johnson (5-0, 5 KOs) also
spoke breifly stating he was excited to fight at the new Fed Ex Forum in front
of his home fans. He encouraged everyone in the area to come watch him
fight, and watch Johnson and Jones while they were there.

Roy
Jones Jr. at the FedEx Forum in Memphis! (8/4/04)
Because of Brian Young's Prize Fight Promotions,
LLC and the sparkling new Fedex Forum, the official announcement
has been made that former WBC, WBA, IBO, IBA, and NBA Light Heavyweight
Champion Roy Jones Jr. (49-2, 38KO) will fight current IBF Light
Heavyweight Champ, Glen Johnson (40-9-2, 27KO) on September 25 at
the FedEx Forum in Memphis, TN. This will be the second largest fight
in Memphis history. Second, only to the highly anticipated Tyson-Lewis
bout in 2002. Thanks to Brain Young and the state-of-the-art FedEx
Forum, Memphis is beginning to secure this caliber of fights for
the area. Great things are happening in Memphis Boxing! More to come!
Goings,
Webb, Pillow, Logan stay undefeated! (8/4/04)
Of the 5 fights at the New Daisy on Beale Street
last evening, 4 of them featured boxers that brought perfect records
into the ring with them. Jim Goings, James Webb, Jerome Pillow and
Darnell Logan had goose eggs in the loss catagory as they stepped
into the ring and after last night, those fighters maintained their
undefeated status.
New Daisy has a solid Line-up
for August! (7/27/04)
The fight card for this month's boxing at the
New Daisy Theater looks to be a great one
as 4 of the 5 listed bouts feature undefeated boxers. See below for
Logan/Burford -
should be an exciting fight as Burford always brings everything he has
to the table. Logan will be able to score in this fight but he will need
to be ready for Burford's headhunting. Pillow/Dinkins -
Pillow has been a very impressive fighter who uses his jab and goes to
the body with confidence. Look for Denkins to bring some veteran skills
to the fight but remember Dinkins hasn't won a fight since 9/2/98. Webb/Hammac -
Webb needs to continue to focus on fundamentals. With a fine record of
14-0 one sometimes forgets to keep their guard up. Hammac likes to move
around but is not scared to fight. Bowman/Smith -
Bowman is a good fighter with a will to win and has been in the ring
with some competition. Smith, has been fighting solid comp also. This
one is anybodys fight. Goings/Taylor -
Goings is undefeated in his first 2 professional fights, but he will
have mix it up with Taylor to win next Tuesday night.
Sam's
Town "Fight
NIght"
The Championship Boxing Series continues at Sam's Town Casino on July 31st.
There will be 7 Nationally Televised bouts and Attendees will get a preview
of light heavyweight John Johnson of Batesville, MS. Johnson (4-0, 4 KOs),
is an impressive puncher but has not yet been truely challenged. In the
Main Event, Atlanta, Georgia's, Antonio Davis (12-1, 5KOs) will battle
New Orleans native, Bradley Verdin (9-6, 6KOs) 10 rounds for the IBF/USBA
Regional Title.
Another local fight favorite, Chirsty Nickle (Southaven, MS) will be featured
in a 4 round fight.
White Stopped by Ryan (7/13/04)
Heavyweights Dickie Ryan and Ed White, of parsons,
TN, battled it out at Festival Park, gary Indiana, on Sunday (7/11/04).
White (11-11, 8 KO), also known as "Big Ed", held his own
until round 8 when Ryan (55-8, 43 KO) handed him 2 standing 8 counts.
Ryan continued to hammer away and eventually, in round 10, closed the
deal.
Mack Dominates Wiggins in 2! (7/12/04)
Covington, Tn fighter, Donnell Wiggins (21-5-2,
12KO) was KO'd early in round 2 by hard hitting light Heavyweight
Yusef Mack, who improves his record to (16-0-2, 10KO). The fight
was on the undercard of Elder vs. Trejo and was televised by
ESPN2 Friday night from the Atlanta Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA.
"The Dream" Chops
down Hunt in 1! (7/12/04)
With his 34th victory, a KO of Jackson, TN
native (and New Daisy boxer) Marvin Hunt, Heavyweight, Faruq "The
Dream" Saleem (34-0, 30KO), continues to win big. Saleem
fought Hunt Saturday night at the Asbury Park Convention Center
in Asbury Park, New Jersey. With a record like that its not hard
to say that he is on the waiting list to fight for a championship
belt. At 34-0, Saleem sounds ever impressive, however, his opponents
record's (345-787-35) tell the tale.
Wiggins to fight Yusef Mack Tonight in Atlanta (7/9/04)
Boxing on the undercard of the Ebo Elder vs
Fernando Trejo bout, Covington, Tennessee's, Donnell Wiggins
(21-4-2, 12KO) will take on Light Heavyweight Yusef Mack (15-0-2,
9KO) tongiht at the Atlanta Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA. Wiggins
is 1-2 in his last 3 fights but has faced some major fire power
in Jeff Lacy and Rico Hoye. In Wiggins' last fight he defeated
Charles Ward at the New Daisy Theater in Memphis, TN. The Elder/Trejo
bout is televised on ESPN2, however, it is not certain that the
Wiggins/Mack bout will be televised.

Sams Town - Wood blasts
Mitchell! (6/21/04)
Scotti Vandevender - Fightnews.com
Brian Young’s Prizefight boxing at Sam’s
Town Casino in Tunica, MS brought the crowd another pleasing
night of action. In the main event, heavyweight Frank Wood (22-3,
15 KOs) from nearby Nashville, TN proved far too powerful for
late replacement Tim Mitchell (9-3, 4 KOs).
Wood began displaying a powerful left hook as he staggered Mitchell
backward. By the end of round one Mitchell’s nose bled
as breathed hard, deep breaths between rounds.
Round two opened with Wood striking a right hook that sprawled Mitchell across
the canvas and into the ropes. Mitchell rose bravely only to suffer an onslaught
of a left uppercut and right cross that sent him out on his feet. Referee Elmo
Adolph mercifully halted the bout at 2:22 of round two.
Sams Town - John
Johnson now 4-0 (4 KO)! (6/21/04)
Scotti Vandevender - Fightnews.com
In the feature bout, light heavyweight
John Johnson (4-0, 4 KOs) continued to build to his mystique
as the local crowd favorite. This time the powerful youngster
faced experienced veteran T.C. James (5-22, 3 KOs), who proved
capable of frustrating the young power puncher with his evasiveness
and award style early in the bout.
Johnson entered the ring behind a booming musical rap about his
home state of Mississippi, a cloud of synthetic smoke, and a
raucous reception from the
crowd. Actually more composed and less wild and erratic than his previous bouts,
Johnson stalked his prey from his initial stand off in the center of the ring,
where he chose to seek out his opponent, stand face to face, and glare a Lennox
Lewis-influenced stare through his opponent. Johnson’s countenance wore
the same cool, calculated expression throughout the bout, a hunter meticulously
seeking his prey.
Johnson struggled to find a way to land against the awkward James, but finally
caught up with him in round two with a left hand that sent him into the ropes.
Then Johnson increased the pressure in round three, forcing referee Paul Sita
to halt the punishment at 1:31.
Sams Town - Christy Nickel
Wins big in one! (6/21/04)
Scotti Vandevender - Fightnews.com
Female junior middleweight Christy
Nickel (2-1, 2 KOs) entered the ring smiling joyously and exuberantly.
She then proceeded to completely out-power her opponent, Michelle
Ewing (0-8). Nickel landed a solid straight right hand that sent
Ewing sprawling on her back. Then a Nickel straight left hand
flattened Ewing again. Ewing rose only to receive a left hook
followed by a right hand that ended her night in the ring at
1:46 of round one.
Sams Town - Whitfield
Too Fast for Burford! (6/21/04)
Scotti Vandevender - Fightnews.com
Amateur sensation Rayonta Whitfield (1-0) began
his pro career as a junior featherweight with a solid shutout of
veteran Chris Burford (5-21-1, 4 KOs). While it might have seemed
risky on paper to begin his career against an experienced opponent
who has fought most of his battles at a higher weight class, Rayonta
demonstrated lightning speed and movement in easily dominating
every exchange of every round.
Whitfield clearly displayed why Prizefight Boxing has place a great deal of
emphasis on this young man. With ring generalship like he displayed against
Burford, this fighter already appears years ahead of a 1-0 fighter.
Sams Town - Hubinger Blasts
Marsh! (6/21/04)
Scotti Vandevender - Fightnews.com
Light heavyweight Adam Hubinger (3-0, 3 KOs)
looked impressive in his battle against Robert Marsh (8-25-2,
3 KOs). Hubinger immediately worked behind a strong jab, often
following it with a hard right hand. By round two Hubinger mixed
in right uppercuts and blasted Marsh into the ropes. As Marsh’s
nose gushed a fountain of crimson, he stood in the corner unable
to answer the bell for the third round.
Sams Town - Local favorite
Jason Ross Handed second loss! (6/21/04)
Scotti Vandevender - Fightnews.com
Local kickboxing favorite Jason Ross (0-1)
from nearby Southaven, MS made his pro boxing debut at light
heavyweight against the extremely experienced Eric Rinehardt
(15-52-1, 10 KOs). Rinehardt served as a replacement for Tyrone
Dowdy, who was to make his pro debut as well. Ross came out thundering
right hand artillery, fighting in a virtual phone booth as he
landed solid blows. Ross ended the round with a left hook that
sent Rinehardt reeling.
Round two saw much of the same as Ross continued a barrage of
power shots. Ross maintained a kickboxer’s stance with his hands low as he attempted
to land more power punches. But by the end of the round the much more experienced
Rinehardt began to duck, move, and block Ross’s attempts to land.
Round three featured a complete reversal as Rinehardt came back strong. A fatigued
Ross stood directly in front of his opponent as Rinehardt’s left hand
began finding its mark – Ross’s skull. Rinehardt trapped Ross against
the ropes as Ross absorbed left hook after left hook. A dazed and confused
Ross took a beating to end the round and, suffering an injury to his left arm,
could not return for the final round.

Memphis In sights! (6/4/04)
Former Undisputed Heavyweight Champion Riddick
Bowe (40-1, 1NC, 32 KO's) will return to boxing in 2004 on a
quest to become champion once again. The 36 year old Bowe was
a 1988 Olympic Silver Medalist and began his career in 1989 mowing
down whoever stepped in his way. Then he met Evander Holyfield,
who beat him by majority decision in 1993 to win the WBA and
IBF Heavyweight Titles (Bowe's 3 fights with Holyfield are some
of the greatest fight series in recent past). His last two fights
were against Andrew Golata which Bowe won due to DQ of Golata
for hitting below the belt.
In 1997, Bowe retired from boxing and temporarily attended boot camp for Marines.
Riddick was released from Prison last month after serving 18 months for domestic
violence charges stemming from 1998.

Logan, Sharpening Skills (6/2/04)
Covington, TN, boxer Darnell Logan
contiunes to look like a very promising up and coming fighter
in the ring. He shows good discipline quick feet and a nice jab
with increasing power. That being said, the opponents that he
has come to face in the ring have had combined records of 0-15
and none of those charactersists. Logan will eventually step
up to fight some better fights in the near future but there is
no reason to rush his growth and throw him into the mix before
he is ready.

Daisy 5/5/04 – Gross
Slugs Out Victory! (5/4/04)
By Scotti Vandevender – Fightnews.com
Shelby “The Bonetown Brawler” Gross
(14-1, 12 KOs) jumped into the ring at the New Daisy Theatre in Memphis,
TN Tuesday night adorned in an oversized pair of overalls, his arms flailing
about. When the bell rang to begin the first round, the overalls
were off but the arms still flailed, this time all over his opponent
Jeff Holcomb (9-3-1, 4 KOs) en route to winning the WBE Cruiserweight
title.
From the opening bell Holcomb went on the defensive, soon drawing boos from
the impatient crowd. But by round three Gross managed to begin landing
power shots, drawing a standing eight count from referee Clay Huttleston. By
the close of round three Holcomb’s nose trailed crimson down his cheeks
as Gross blasted him with left hooks.
Round five showed Holcomb come alive a little, landing a lumbering left and
right combination, but Gross sloughed them off as if bathwater splashed in
his face and sent Holcomb back into a retreating, defensive mode.
Gross then began round eight with a huge right hand to the ribs that sent Holcomb’s
mouthpeice flying to the canvas. Referee Clay Huttleston warned Holcomb
that the next time would result in a one-point deduction. But that never
came to pass as Gross again landed a hard right hand that caused another standing
eight count. Then, during a pause as the ringside physician
examined him, Holcomb’s corner asked for a stoppage.

Daisy 5/5/04 – Pillow
Punishes Hammac! (5/4/04)
By Scotti Vandevender – Fightnews.com
In a lightweight fight, Jerome Pillow (11-0, 8 KOs) punished
Phillip Hammac (4-8, 2 KOs) for two rounds earning, bloodying
his face in a TKO victory as Hammac could not answer the bell
for round three.
Hammac Puzzled Pillow during most of round one, coming forward, smothering
his punches, and landing body punches. But by the end of the round Pillow
began to land on Hammac’s chin. Pillow followed the action in round
three by driving a straight right hand into Hammac’s nose, probably breaking
it, and definitely opening a free flow of blow for the duration of the bout.
But, Pillow continued to land power punches to Hammac’s skull, opening
another cut above his right eye. Hammac stumbled back to the corner,
his skull painted red. Hammac decided himself at that point that he wanted
no more of the power-punching Pillow, who is rapidly becoming a local powerhouse
at 135 pounds.
New Daisy 5/5/04 – Freeman wins
Rematch vs Burford (5/4/04)
By Scotti Vandevender – Fightnews.com
Welterweight
Rodney Freeman (3-1, 2 KOs) out-muscled a game Chris Burford (5-19,
4 KOs) who gave up 13 pounds. This
was a rematch from a fight where Burford caught Freeman with a round
house right hand that flattened him. This time Freeman seemed more
content to land hard shots and avoid the knockout blow, a strategy that
earned him a victory this time around.
Burford begin round one with a hard left hook to Freeman’s chin. Freeman
smiled as if to say it didn’t hurt. The two exchanged power shots
throughout the round and Burford ended the round strong with a right hand.
Burford continued to press the action in round two, hurting Freeman in the
ropes. But, unfortunately for him, Burford wore down and was unable to
finish as Freeman began using his size advantage to muscle in for hard shots. Freeman
then worked behind a body attack to finish strong and take advantage of Burford,
earning him the victory.

Chin Keeps Bonds Undefeated (5/4/04)
By Scotti Vandevender – Fightnews.com
Middleweight Marcus Bonds (3-0-1) won via a TKO in round two
over Billy Tipton (1-5), easily outgunning Tipton as referee
Allan Lovell stops the action after
the fourth knockdown.
Tipton landed a straight right hand to begin the bout but Bonds continued forward,
looking to land a left hook. But it was a right hand that sent Tipton
down the first time. Then a left hook against the ropes dropped him again
in round one.
Round two looked pretty much the same as a Bonds right uppercut sent Tipton
sprawling to the canvas again. Then Tipton charged back at Bonds who
intently stepped forward and struck with a left hook that sent Tipton to the
floor on his back. Referee Allan Lovell immediately called an end to
the punishment.

Loses Technical Decision to Leija (5/3/04)
Jessie James Leija came out of his friday night fight with local Memphis fighter
Marteze Logan looking like a beaten man. However, he was not. Leija was handed
a technical desicion win over Marteze Logan after the ringside physician decided
to stop the fight, before the bell beginning round nine, due to cuts above
Leija's left eye. These cuts were presumed to be caused by clashes of heads.
The only knock-down was in the seventh when Leija landed a hard right hand
to the body that dropped Logan to the canvas. Leija improves his record to
46-6-2, 19KO's while Logans record falls to 13-8-1, 2KO's.
Even with the loss to Leija last week one can't help but notice the fact that
Marteze Logan has been going out and fighting solid boxers with impressive
records. At the time of their bouts, the 8 fighters Logan has lost to, had
combined records totaling 103-9-3, with 56 wins coming by way of KO. April

Daisy 4/6/04 – Strickland
overpowers Smith! (4/7/04)
By
Scotti
Vandevender – Fightnews.com
The
incredibly durable middleweight Reggie Strickland (64-260-16, 14
KOs) showed the extensive ring experience he possesses, over 17 years
in the ring with an amazing 343 total pro fights, in soundly defeating
Toris Smith (1-12).
After having fought three fights in the month of February, the 35-year-old
Strickland added to his win total last night at the New Daisy Theatre by using
solid defense and rapid flurries of punches. Strickland began round one
working the famous shoeshine punch combination and then striking a left hook
to the head. Strickland followed with a left-right combination as Smith
seemed helpless to do anything but watch the display of speed.
Smith lumbered forward attempting to land power shots but the swift-footed
Strickland consistently blocked the efforts and retaliated with combination
after combination to the body and head of the defenseless Smith.

Wins Rematch VS Johnson! (4/7/04)
By
Scotti Vandevender – Fightnews.com
Marcus
Bonds (2-0-1) earned another victory over the game Lamont Johnson
(1-2-2, 1 KO).
This was the pair’s third match with Bonds having won the first and the
second match ending in a tie. Bonds showed a solid chin early as Johnson
landed two hard straight right hands but they didn’t slow Bonds’ attack.
Bonds picked things up at the end of round one and followed up with heavy trading
in round two. Bonds began a trend of escaping from the ropes by dodging
and landing solid combinations en route to a unanimous decision.
