Memphis, TN, March
21, 2008 – Friday night at the New Daisy Theatre, Mid South All Star Promotions
continued to push for a revitalization of Beale Street's and New Daisy Theatre
Boxing scene by offering a fight card with nine bouts for fight fans.
In the main event, southpaw Jameson "Jamie Kang" Bostice (13-3, 8 KO's)
hailing from Brooklyn, NY, faced Jackson, TN's, Marvin Hunt (11-21, 4 KO's) in
a four round light heavy clash.
In the opening round Bostice looked to set up the big one with his long jab and
was able todo just that. But, it wasn't just one punch, it was a culmination,
that dropped Hunt twice within the round.
Bostice dispatched of his opponent early in round two.
2004 Olympian for Kazakhstan, Beibut Shumenov (3-0, 3 KO's) fighting by way of
Las Vegas, NV, faced off with Columbus, MS's, Shannon Miller (23-40-8, 17 KO's)
in a scheduled six round light heavyweight matchup.
The most impressive of all fighters this evening was Beibut Shumenov. Shumenov
waltzed into the ring with his white robe tightly gathered around his neck as
if he had just stepped out from a relaxing shower.
In round one Miller managed to land his jab but was dropped by a Shumenov right
hand in a flash knockdown.
Miller would be on the canvas again throughout the fight due to their contrasting
styles causing slips. The comment of the evening came from referee Clay Huddleston
in round three when he announced to the fighters in close quarters, first to
Shumenov, "No more pushing" and then to Miller "You - stay off
the canvas!". Later in round three a Shumenov flurry dropped Miller.
Round four was all she wrote for Miller who toppled over seconds after a Shumenov
left hook smashed into his liver. Official time was 1:03 of round four.
Shumenov was a very interesting fighter to behold. He moved unconventionally
around the ring with a martial arts flavor showed impressive balance and was
very, very confident. At one point in the fight, Shumenov threw a series of punches
and ended the flurry with left hook which he halted in mid air. It wasn't a complete
punch but it was more than a feign. Nonetheless, it was a rare and notable occurrence.
Rashad Ganway (3-0, 3 KO's) of Little Rock, AR, met up with Terrance Roy (9-26,
1 KO) of Ripley, TN, in a scheduled four round lightweight contest.
Terrance Roy was down once in the first and twice in the second. Ganway proved
to be too much for Roy and won their bout by KO at 2:09 of round two.
Tryone Dowdy (3-14, 2 KO), of Memphis, TN, fought Hashim Louis (debut) of Memphis,
TN, in a four round Super Middleweight fight.
The Dowdy vs Louis fight was unspectacular but proved to have an interesting
outcome.
In round three, after much wrestling about the ring as in previous rounds, Louis
received a cut and appeared to quit in his corner. Dowdy was given the victory.
However, had Louis not quit the bout would have been ruled a no contest since
the fight did not go four rounds.
Chris Hancock of Detroit, MI, climbed into the ring against Lucas Young (debut)
of Parson's, TN, in a scheduled four round Heavyweight bout.
Their fight lasted just over two minutes but in that two minutes Young was called
for a knock down when he turned his back on his opponent. Then Young was given
a standing eight count and retired. Offical time was 2:13 of round one. Hancock
wins his first bout and improves his record to (1-2, 1 KO).
Chris Rudd (4-0, 2 KO's) of Covington, TN, toed the line with Damon Antione (7-22,
3 KO's) of Akron, OH in a scheduled four round jr. welterweight matchup.
In round one Antione loaded up with the right hand while Rudd threw one two combinations.
Antione was dropped at the end of round two by a shot to the body.
Rudd switched to counterpuncher in round three. His left hook found a happy home
just over Antione's extended jab. Antione received a cut on the scalp above his
left ear. In a freak occurrence overlooked by referee Wilson Simpson, Antoine's
corner treated the cut. When the fight resumed Rudd continued to connect.
In the fourth and final round, Rudd opened up with full steam and let his hands
go. Antoine looked to land a big right and was willing to take his medicine to
do so.
Rudd received the unanimous decision after four rounds.
In the most entertaining fight of the evening, Warren Browning (6-0-1, 4KO's)
of London, KY, squared off with Kelsey Arnold (debut) of Lexington, KY in a scheduled
four round heavyweight contest.
Round one both big boys banged and brawled. Arnold with a jab to set up a long
right hand and Browning countered and connected looping hooks.
Arnold bled in from the nose in round two and was down in round three.
Both fighters continued to brawl and throw punches but were running out of steam.
The action was halted in round three when time was called to
tighen sagging ring ropes as both mean were heavy. Arnold was
very tall in stature.
Each fighter greatly benefited from the time out and used it
to regain their breath.
When the bout resumed Arnold shot out of his corner and landed
a thudding jab right hand combo.
Previous to round number four the ring ropes were tightened
and adjusted again.
In round four Browning continued to pressure and bully the
ever weakening Arnold. Arnold found a sudden burst of energy
midway threw the round and dropped Browning
with a series of shots to the body (possibly assisted by Brownings sheer
exhaustion).
Their bout was ruled a majority draw and both fighters were applauded by
onlookers.
Tyrone Chatman (2-0, 2 KO's) of St. Louis, MO, knocked out Carlos Johnson
(debut) at :51 of round one a scheduled four round jr. welterweight contest.
Cookeville, TN's, Ben Foust (8-0, 8 KO's) KO'd Jonathan Bruce (1-10, 1 KO's)
of Parsons, TN, at :53 seconds of round one in a scheduled four round light
heavyweight bout.
Bruce was down in the opening seconds of the fight and was sent down for
the final time at :53 of round number one when he was knocked out on his
feet and
fell to the canvas face first. Tensions were high while the ringside physician
attended the fallen fighter. Eventually, Bruce regained consciousness and
was able to leave the ring on his on power.
The next fight schduled at the New Daisy April 14, 2008.
